Presentation transcript:

Dative with Special Verbs (Pages 302 - 303) Certain verbs that are transitive in English have an indirect object in Latin instead of a direct object; but the dative is translated as if it were the accusative. Such verbs are: favor, help, injure please, trust, distrust, command, obey, serve, resist, threaten, envy, pardon, spare, and persuade. Notice in these sentences that the transitive English verbs really contain the idea of giving or showing that we find in verbs taking an indirect object. 1. Suis amicis favet. He favors (shows favors to) his friends. 2. Mihi imperat. He orders (gives orders to) me. 3. Hostibus restituerunt. They resisted (gave resistance to) the enemy. 4. Helvetiis persuasit. He persuaded (offered persuasion to) the Helvetians. 5. Patres plebi nocuerunt. The patricians wronged (gave injury or harm to) the people. 6. Socii paci studebant. The allies desired (were eager for) peace. 7. Ciceroni confidebant. They trusted (gave confidence to) Cicero.
