TEK B.4B Concept: Investigate and Identify Cellular Processes Including Functions of Cellular Parts

The endoplasmic reticulum (ER) is found in two forms: rough endoplasmic reticulum and smooth endoplasmic reticulum. Smooth ER contains collections of enzymes that perform specialized tasks, including the synthesis of membrane lipids and the detoxification of drugs. Rough ER is studded with ribosomes on its outer membrane. Rough ER is involved in the synthesis of proteins and transports these proteins to the Golgi apparatus. The function of the Golgi apparatus is to modify, sort, and package proteins and other materials from the endoplasmic reticulum for storage in the cell or secretion outside the cell.
