Baby Boom & Youth Movement A. The Baby Boom entered high school and College in the 60’s and 70’s. B. This generational change led to new ideas 1. New Left 2. Counterculture 3. Hippies C. It also aided in the protests over Civil Rights and Vietnam

Port Huron Statement A. Student for a Democratic Society: became “New Left” 1. Criticized wealthy, elite who controlled the nation B. Issued Port Huron statement wanted: 1. End to a country run by “Big Corporations” & “Big Government”

Free Speech Movement was on college campuses B. inspired by the struggle for civil rights and opposition to the Vietnam War. B. Began when students at the University of California, Berkeley protested a ban on on-campus political activities. C. Students demanded their right to free speech and academic freedom. D. Started a wave of student activism and involvement E. Eventually the Supreme Court sided with the students.
