2 Rise of Counterculture counterculture: rebellion of teens & young adults against mainstream American society Blamed parents’ generation for problems: threat of nuclear war, racial discrimination, the Vietnam War, environmental pollution

3 Rising Student Activism Political speeches were outlawed in a designated area at UCB CORE member arrested Thousands of students blocked the police car Later, leaders are disciplined and students participate in a sit-in Free Speech Movement spreads

4 Life in the Counterculture Youth left traditional life to find “carefree existence” Rejected materialism Some hippies formed communities in run-down urban areas: Haigh- Ashbury Others “dropped out” of society- joined rural communes to harmonize w/ nature

5 Hippie Culture Enlightenment through new religions (Buddhism) Searched for answers via astrology Experimented w/ illegal drugs Expressed sense of freedom w/ casual/colorful clothing Embracement of African American culture The Establishment perceived counterculture as threatening, uncivilized, unpatriotic

6 Decline of Counterculture Many became addicted to drugs or died from overdoses No way to support themselves financially
