Excellence is measured by growth: why and how? Gianluca Mule, COO EFQM

Growth… The process of improving some measure of an enterprise's success. Business growth can be achieved either by boosting the top line or revenue of the business with greater product sales or service income, or by increasing the bottom line or profitability of the operation by minimizing costs.

Excellence… Excellent organisations achieve and sustain superior levels performance that meet or exceed the expectations of all their stakeholders. Business Excellence is “excellence” in stakeholder-related performance results. Achieved through excellence in leadership, strategy, customer focus, measurement, analysis and knowledge management, workforce focus and operations

The EFQM Model: at the heart of excellence with the growth in mind ENABLERS RESULTS Leadership Processes, products & services Business results People strategy Partnerships & Resources Results Customer Society ENGAGE DELIVER MANAGE SUPPORT PLAN MEASURE OUTCOME VISION In all organisations, there will be “strategic themes” or objectives that need to be achieved. These will often involve many people, from different parts of the organisation. The Model can be used to help identify how these different actions need to be coordinated to achieve the desired outcome. Learning, creativity and innovation

How does it fit together? The EFQM Excellence Model drives the cause and effect relationships between what their organisation does (the Enablers) and the Results it achieves. Do the staff plans fit in the strategy? Are personal goals and organization goals aligned? Are the products and services efficiently produced? Are the products promoted and sold effectively? Satisfaction of employees Staff turnover, training Leadership People Business Results Processes, Products & Services Strategy Partnerships & Resources People Results Customer Results Society Results Enablers Results Learning, Creativity and Innovation ® Leadership formulates a mission and vision? Leaders are in contact with external stakeholders? Financial results Performance compared to the budget The strategy is aimed at the needs of customers, partners, employees, society? The strategy is supported by figures? Perception of society Consumption of water, electricity Technological developments? Financial reporting? Satisfaction of customers Sales figures, delivery terms To achieve sustained success, any organisation needs strong leadership and clear strategic direction. They need to develop and improve their people, partnerships and processes to deliver value-adding products and services to their customers

Using the EFQM Excellence Model helps organisations to…

EFQM Model used to assess the maturity of organisations 650-1000 points WORLD-CLASS World class results supported by highly effective strategies, systems and people. 451-650 points ADVANCED An industry leader with strong results in comparison to benchmarks, and effective strategies, systems and people in most areas. to provide feedback on the maturity level of excellence 301-450 points MATURE Good results in most areas but innovation/industry leadership is lacking. Strategies, systems and people are not fully benchmarked and/or systematically improved. 151-300 points PROGRESS Some good practices but not an organisational-wide cohesive approach and results are moderate or not known in some areas. 0-150 points STARTING Early stages of developing an effectively run organisation

Does Business Excellence really deliver excellent results? We know if organisations commit to business excellence and undertake regular assessments and implement improvement actions their stakeholder results will improve (Enablers refer to points in Leadership, Strategic Planning, Customer & Market Focus, Measurement, Analysis, & Knowledge Management, Human Resource focus, & Process Management)

Input Output EFQM as the ultimate productivity tool driving growth Leadership People Business Results Processes, Products & Services Strategy Partnerships & Resources People Results Customer Results Society Results Enablers Results Learning, Creativity and Innovation ® Business excellence frameworks guide organisations to make the right interventions and use the right techniques to produce the best outputs relative to inputs

Examples of Impact on Performance

Business success requires sustained Leadership Commitment “The reason we are so committed to EFQM is because over the years we have shown that the businesses which use the EFQM Model very systematically are the ones which get the best business results over the long term” Juergen Maier Chief Executive, Siemens UK Leadership is the single most important variable in the success of implementing an excellence model. This is true whether your organization is implementing EFQM, Malcolm Baldrige, Balanced Scorecard, CMMI, all others represented at this conference, or what will be the FDA Precertification Approach.

EFQM Recognition Designed to provide milestones on your journey towards excellence Perfect way to motive your people or celebrate your success Independent assessment Improve your competitiveness Create enthusiasm for continuous improvement Instil a culture of excellence International visibility and recognition Maximize your Recognition and visibility Regular assessments are very important for organisations striving towards sustainable excellence. EFQM promotes self-assessments and provides external assessment & recognition. Self-Assessment enables organisations to determine where they are on their journey towards excellence and plan out the next steps.  The simplest tools, such as the Questionnaires, can be completed in an hour. EFQM has developed a number of tools to help organisations complete this process, from simple questionnaire to simulating an EFQM Award Assessment. The key is choosing the right tool for you, based on how much time, knowledge and resources you have available or how detailed you want the output to be. External Assessment & Recognition provides organisations with an external view. The EFQM Recognition scheme is designed to provide milestones on the journey to Excellence. It is a perfect way to motivate your People to go the extra mile and it helps to build the culture of excellence and continuous improvement. Of course it also gives organisations international visibility. EFQM Recognition scheme consists of 3 levels: C2E, R4E, Award. Any organisation can apply for the first two levels but in order to participate in the Award, the organisation needs to achieve level of 600 points minimum. The first level is available in two options, … Option 2 is a 1 day Assessment, with 2 Assessors focusing on main business blocks such as: Strategy & Key Results, Customer Management, People Management, Process Management and Sustainability. R4E is full EFQM Assessment according to Model criteria 3-5 Assessors between 2-5 days depending on size. Of course the EFQM Award is our most rigorous assessment process. In short you can say that EFQM assessments are bit like a health check of the organisation and that is why they should be done regularly for best effect. The end result of the assessment is a feedback report, which then is translated into an improvement plan.
