Portugal and Spain lead the Way Portugal Charts the Western coast of Africa --Henry the Navigator sponsors exploration The Spanish Encounter the Americas --needed a route to the East by all means --were hopeful but ‘disappointed’

Portugal Heads South Henry the Navigator The Portuguese chart Madeira Islands and the Azores 1488 the Cape of Good Hope is rounded But India isn’t reached until 1498

The Spanish head East Portuguese claimed their routes Rival monarchies Columbus convinces them to seek gold, glory and God Had a chance of making it to China or India before Portugal The Treaty of Tordesillas, 1494
