History of The Cell

1665 Robert Hooke (English Scientist) observed thin slices of cork and named the little boxes cells.

1675 Anton Van Leeuwenhoek (Dutch Scientist) observed pond water and discovered tiny living creatures naming them “animalcules”

1838 Matthias Schleiden (German Botanist) concluded that cells compose every part of the plant.

1839 Theodor Schwann (German Zoologist) made the same observation with animals.

1858 Rudolph Virchow (German Physician) observed that cells come only from other cells.

The Cell Theory Their observations led to the Cell Theory. 1. All living things are composed of one or more cells. 2. In organisms, cells are the basic units of structure and function. 3. Cells are produced only from existing cells.

Students draw cells in journal on p.20 Students will use class set of books to read p.70-72 to complete Venn Diagram on Pro/Euk Cells and Cell Theory. (12 minutes time limit) Individual work - partner share - large group share

Prokaryote (Pro means before) Eukaryote (eu means true)

Prokaryotes Eukaryotes No Nucleus Single Circular“Naked” DNA No Membrane bound organelles smaller Primitive First cells on earth Unicellular Ex: Bacteria Nucleus Present DNA found in Chromosomes in the nucleus Has Membrane bound organelles Larger More evolved Unicellular or multicellular Ex: plant, animal, fungi

Common Characteristics all Cells Share *Cell membrane / plasma membrane *Cytoplasm *Ribosomes *Ability to reproduce themselves *All posses genetic material (DNA)
