Talk to us It would really help if you could inform us of any changes in contact numbers or family circumstances as soon as they happen. If you have any issues please come to the class teachers FIRST. The best times to speak to us are preferably after school or at an arranged earlier appointment – e.g. 8.30am – not when the children are coming in.

Snacks Please label your child’s snack and water bottle. Healthy snacks Monday – Thursday Treat snack allowed on Fridays Children can bring a small, labelled water bottle which has a sports cap Water only.

Groups Children are registered in 2 classes. The children are taught literacy and maths with their own class teachers. Throughout the day children have equal access to all the resources and facilities in Y1. For all subjects the children will work in mixed ability groups.

Literacy (English) We look at a range of fiction, non fiction and poetry throughout the course of the year e.g. fairy tales, familiar stories, poetry, letters, instructional writing, information texts etc. Emphasis on sentence structure, spelling of key words and handwriting. We will be continuing to encourage the children to use the cursive script.

You could help your child by: Listening to them read for 5-10 minutes after school and discussing what has happened in the text, looking at key words and tricky words. Any phonics sound’s we practice in school may be written in your reading record to practice at home. Your child’s reading day’s are on the front of their reading record. If groups change then these may also change. Please make sure the reading book is in their packets on these days. Discussing any sort of writing, newspaper stories, bed time stories, recipe books, magazines, letters etc. Playing games such as I spy, singing songs and learning rhymes. Talking about new words and what they mean.

Phonics Screening in Year 1 In June 2019, all Year 1 children across the country will be screened. This involves sounding out and reading 20 real words and 20 ‘alien’ words. It will be carried out during school time, with one of the class teachers one to one.

Maths Focus on the number system: Numbers within 10! Patterns and how to use them. Measuring Addition and subtraction Grouping and sharing

You could help your child by: Counting on and back in steps of 1, 2, 5 and 10 from any number. Practise number bonds – counting on in their heads. Singing counting songs. Using maths in everyday life situations. Paying with coins Telling the time Playing games such as dominoes, snakes and ladders, cards and other board games.

Topic We will cover lots of different topics over the year: All creatures great and small Monsters China Materials Growing things Holidays and journeys. And others of interest to the children that may arise over the year.

Homework Set on Friday back for Friday Reading on set days. CGP books (comprehension or grammar) CGP Maths Spellodrome and Mathletics each week. Spelling test follows Spellodrome. (Fridays)

Other bits of info! Please label all clothing and shoes. Woodland - In groups: Wednesday afternoon. PE will be on Tuesday afternoons. Dance with Miss Nic: ___ Music with Mr Martin _____ Please label all clothing and shoes. See School Website for E – safety. Links to websites

Rewards Individual - Chance cards. - Lots of stickers for good work and behaviour. - Star of the week certificates (4 children each week) - Head Teacher - Class points (They need 20!)

Any questions? The most important thing is that your child fully enjoys their time in year one. We continue to believe that ‘learning through play’ is essential for a smooth transition from the early years and that they are only children once! Please remember that if you have any queries or questions about anything at all, please come in and talk to us!
