DO NOW V: 0 Answer in complete sentences in your INB… Thursday Apr. 23, 2015 Answer in complete sentences in your INB… What is important when setting up a science experiment?

Homework & Agenda V: 0 Homework No homework! Today’s Agenda Helicopter Lab

Helicopter Lab – Objective Students will conduct an experiment to determine if wing length will affect the descent of a paper helicopter.

Helicopter Lab – Problem/Question V: 1 How does the ____________________________ (independent variable) affect the __________________________________? (dependent variable)

Helicopter Lab – Hypothesis V: 1 If the __________________________________ , (independent variable) then the ___________________________________ . (dependent variable)

Helicopter Lab - Materials V: 1 List the materials you will used to perform the experiment.

Helicopter Lab - Variables Independent (what you will be changing): _____________ Dependent (what will respond to the change): _________ Constants (what must remain the same): ●

Helicopter Lab - Procedure V: 1 Prepare the helicopter for flight. Cut out the solid lines. Fold on the dotted lines. Stand on a chair to drop the helicopter from a height of 2 meters. When you drop the helicopter, start the stopwatch. Stop the stopwatch when the helicopter hits the ground. Record the number of seconds it takes for the helicopter to reach the floor in the data table (the time of descent). Do two more trials and record the data. Cut the ends of the wings at the 4. Repeat steps 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 for wing lengths of 4, 3, 2, and 1.

Helicopter Lab - Observations Make a list of difficulties with or knowledge gained during your experiment, or modifications to your procedure.

Helicopter Lab – Data Analysis V: 1 Graph your data. Be sure to label your axes, use a consistent interval, and title your graph. Graph the independent variable on the x-axis and the dependent variable on the y-axis.

Helicopter Lab – Conclusion Questions V: 1 Answer in complete sentences in your INB. In this experiment, what was the independent variable? What was the dependent variable? List three things you should try to keep constant each time you try this experiment?

Helicopter Lab – Conclusion Questions V: 1 Read the following paragraph then answer the questions: Bonita wanted to know if adding mass to her paper helicopter would affect how long it would stay in the air. She predicted that adding some mass would help to stabilize the helicopter and keep it in the air longer than a helicopter without extra mass. She experimented with different numbers of paper clips attached to her helicopter. 4. What is he problem question in Bonita’s experiment? 5. What is Bonita’s hypothesis? 6. What is her independent variable? What is her dependent variable?
