Walking Lab Write-Up Lab Directions

Collect Data The hallway will be marked out in 5 m intervals. Students will be stationed at one of the 5 m intervals with a timer. At the teacher’s signal, a student will begin walking at a constant rate down the hall while all the other students simultaneously start their stopwatches. As the student walking passes a 5 m mark, the student at that mark will stop their timer and record the time. We will repeat this procedure 4 times with 4 different walkers. After we have collected all the data, we will combine all our data together to make one data set.

Make Graph Obtain a piece of graph paper Label the x-axis as time (measured in seconds) Label the y-axis as position (measured in meters) Determine your scale for each axis – Find the largest x value and divide by the number of squares you have available to graph on (# of boxes across) – Find the largest y value and divide by the number of squares you have available to graph on (# of boxes up)

Make Graph (cont.) 1.Plot your points – Remember time is the x value and position is the y value) 2.Draw a best-fit line for each trial 3.Pick 2 points on each best-fit line and calculate the slope Slope=(y 2 -y 1 )/(x 2 -x 1 ) 4.Clearly label each walker’s slope (include units) – Show all work/calculations

Lab Write-Up Include the following (these all come from the Lab Notebook Requirements page in the front of your notebook) – Title – Problem/Question (Purpose) – Materials – Procedure (This is labeled as the Explore section) – Experimental Design Questions Dependent and independent variable How will extraneous factors be handled? What data will be collected How will you provide repeatable data?

Lab Write-Up – Data Display – Evidence and Analysis of Results In the paragraph (or more) analyzing the data include the following – Compare/contrast your trials – How does the graph of each trial compare with what you observed while we were collecting data – How are the changes in what you observed reflected in the graphs? – Answer the 3 questions under the “Evaluate” section on the printed out lab paper – Reflection
