פרידה קאלו נולדה במקסיקו ב1907 פרידה קאלו נולדה במקסיקו ב1907. בת לאבא יהודי-הונגרי, ולאמא ממוצא ספרדי- אינדיאני. בילדותה סבלה ממחלת הפוליו. כמתבגרת נרשמה ללימודי רפואה. בגיל 18 נפגעה קשות בתאונת אוטובוס, ולכן נאלצה להפסיק את לימודיה. כתוצאה מהתאונה סבלה משברים בעמוד השדרה, בעצם הבריח, בצלעות, באגן, בכתפיים וברגליים, והייתה המנותקת למיתתה למשך יותר משנה. במהלך תקופות החלמתה היא התחילה לצייר. במהלך חייה עברה יותר מ30 ניתוחים. בגיל 22 נישאה לאמן המקסיקאני המפורסם דייגו ריברה, המבוגר ממנה ב20 שנה. מערכת היחסים הסוער שלהם שרד, בגידות, תהפוכות בתחומי הקריירה, מערכות יחסים של פרידה עם נשים אחרות, גירושין, נישואים שניים, מצב בריאותי קשה וחוסר היכולת של פרידה ללדת. "סבלתי משתי תאונות קשות בחיי... האחד שפגע בי חשמלית, והשני היה דייגו" - פרידה קאלו תאונת הדרכים פגעה בה פיזית, ודייגו, רגשית.
