Indirect Characterization Using S.T.E.A.L. Indirect Characterization

Speech The Cat’s words reveal that he Wants attention Enjoys being goofy and silly

Thoughts “So all we could do was to Sit! Sit! Sit! Sit! And we did not like it. Not one little bit.” Thoughts reveal that the narrator was not happy. We learn the thoughts of characters in stories narrated in 1st person and 3rd person omniscient.

Effect on Others The fish is clearly not enjoying the game that the Cat has introduced. The fish’s reaction reinforces the idea that the Cat’s actions are inappropriate and unsafe. This reveals that the Cat is unconcerned about what others think.

Actions The cat plays a game that he calls “Up-Up- Up with a Fish.” The game is dangerous and not appropriate for indoor activities. This shows that he is not concerned about rules and safety.

Looks The Cat arrives with a big smile and a really tall hat. This reveals that the cat is happy. We also see that he has an interesting sense of style.

Your Turn! Use S.T.E.A.L. to identify the indirect characterization of one of the characters from our stories.
