4 Direct Characterization
ta The author, narrator, or another character directly states what the character is like. Ex: Grayson was a tall, broad-shouldered football player who always had a smile on his face.

5 Indirect Characterization
Indirect characterization requires the reader to look for clues that reveal a character’s traits and motivation. Ex: Tasha ran up the stairs to her room, tears streaming down her face, and slammed her door loudly, hoping her mother would hear.

6 Static Character A character that does not change through the course of the story.

7 Dynamic Character A character that changes as a result of the events of the story.

8 Clues to Look for: *Speech-What does the character say? How does the character speak? *Thoughts-What is revealed through the character’s private thoughts and feelings? *Effect on others-How do others behave in reaction to the character? *Actions-What does the character do? How does the character behave? *Looks-What does the character look like? How does the character dress?
