Question 3 What should ship owners do?

Ship recycling policy We consider that ship-owners have an independent responsibility to ensure proper recycling of their ships. This also applies to ships sold to third parties prior to recycling. We urge our members to advise the use of only EU-listed ship recycling facilities.

Conclusion A financial incentive for clean and safe ship recycling at EU level is necessary in order to: implement the polluter pays principle go beyond toothless flag state jurisdiction impact the majority of EU and international ship owneres create a level playing field for owners and recyclers stimulate employment and blue growth in the EU in line with circular economy allow for decent work in South Asia push for the top end rather than the lower end
