Road Transport ensures over 90% in value of all trade distribution in the EU Road transport is vital for the economy of the EU Road transport is an integral part of logistics - a vital production tool No viable alternative Already pays for close to 100% of its externalities, through existing road user charges, taxes and duties (c) International Road Transport Union (IRU) 2010

5 Road usage and externalities
Road freight transport always been willing to pay its way, but: Only for road usage and externalities caused by road freight transport Congestion is not caused by road freight transport only! Double charging is unacceptable How much is covered today through existing taxes, duties and charges? Studies show close to 100% Should not decide on the internalisation of external costs before one know what currently is covered to determine if anything in addition should be paid (c) International Road Transport Union (IRU) 2010

7 Effectively tackling externalities
Earmarking of all revenues collected by various transport modes For reinvestment in the mode they are drawn from To effectively reduce external effects through at-source measures, such as incentives for clean technologies. Voluntary commitment by the road transport industry to reduce CO2 emissions by 30% by 2030 (c) International Road Transport Union (IRU) 2010
