Respiratory System In Class Notes:

Function: (30.5) The respiratory system provides oxygen for cells and removes the waste product, carbon dioxide ,from the body

Organs Involved: (30.5) Trachea Larynx Lungs Nasal Passage Pharynx Tube between larynx and bronchi in which air travels to lungs Larynx Voice box Lungs Organ that house exchange of gases between the blood and air Nasal Passage Tube between naval cavity and the pharynx Pharynx Junction in the throat of the alimentary canal and the trachea Bronchi Two tubes leading from the trachea to the lungs Bronchioles Thin tubes branching from a bronchus within the lung Alveoli One of millions of tiny sacks where gas exchange occurs Diaphragm A sheet of muscle which controls the rate of breath Epiglottis Cover the trachea when you swallow

Sequence of breathing: Inhaling Air pressure inside lungs drops and air enters Diaphragm contracts Lungs are pulled down and they expand Exhaling Air is forced out of the lungs Diaphragm relaxes Lungs return to normal shape and contract

Diagram:

Parts you should know:

How does breathing work? Diaphragm relaxes and contracts to fill and deflate the lungs. A need for oxygen in the muscles causes your brain to crave air and breathing pace increases.

What does smoking do? Fills the lungs with tar which clogs and destroys the lungs.

3 Disorders Chronic Bronchitis: Bronchi and bronchioles become irritated then inflamed making it hard to breathe. Asthma: The heart rate increases and makes the bronchi hyperactive. This also makes it hard to breathe. Respiratory Influenza: Lots of mucus clogs almost all passages of the respiratory system. Again this makes it hard to breathe.
