1 Respiratory System In Class Notes:

2 Function: (30.5) Provides oxygen for cells
Removes waste carbon dioxide from body Keeps you alive

3 Organs Involved: (30.5) Pharynx- a chamber in upper throat
Epiglottis- flap of tissue that covers air pathway and prevents food and water from entering airway Larynx- the voice box Trachea- windpipe Bronchi- air tubes that connect trachea to windpipe Lungs- exchange CO2 and oxygen Bronchioles- bronchus branches into smaller tubes (bronchioles) Alveoli- cluster of air sacs at end of bronchioles Diaphragm- sheet of muscle that expands and contracts as you inhale and exhale

4 Sequence of breathing:
Step 1: When you inhale, the diaphragm contracts and your chest expands Step 2: Oxygen rushes into the lungs Step 3: When you exhale, the diaphragm relaxes and your chest contracts Step 4: Carbon dioxide rushes out of the lungs

8 How is breathing regulated?
The Brain controls breathing involuntary The level of carbon dioxide causes increases and decreases in rates. The CO2 dissolves in the plasma of your blood, then the brain regulates how much oxygen is needed.

9 What effects does smoking have on the respiratory system?
Destroys cilia Increase risk for lung cancer Emphysema – disease that causes the walls of the alveoli to lose flexibility Increase risk for cardio vascular diseases Nicotine addiction

10 Name at least 3 disorders & provide a description:
Asthma = Inflamation of te airways in the lungs, nose, and mouth. Makes breathing difficult. asphyxia = when babies need help breathing at birth. Tracheomalacia = When the walls of the airways are undeveloped.
