1 Respiratory System In Class Notes:

2 Function: (30.5) The function of the respiratory system is…
Provide oxygen for distribution to cells throughout your body Removes the waste product carbon dioxide from the body

3 ORGANS INVOLVED: Pharynx Alveoli Epiglottis Diaphragm Larynx Brain
Trachea Alveoli Diaphragm Brain Bronchi

4 Sequence of Breathing:
When you inhale air enters the respiratory system through the mouth and nose. Air then passes into the pharynx (chamber in the upper throat). The epiglottis is a flap of tissue that covers the air pathway and keeps food and water from entering. From the pharynx the air passes through the voice box, or larynx. Next, air passes through the trachea, or windpipe. The trachea branches into two air tubes called bronchioles. Each bronchus ends in cluster of tiny air sacs called alveoli. Oxygen passes from the alveoli into the blood, and carbon dioxide passes from the blood into the alveoli. Tiny, hair-like cilia line the respiratory system and sweep foreign particles up toward the throat, where they can be swallowed.

6 Parts you should know:

7 How is breathing regulated?
The diaphragm is what controls breathing. The rate of breathing is controlled by the medulla, it is in the brain. When you do activities such as sports or exercising, your breathing rate increases. When you do activities such as sleeping, your breathing rate decreases.

8 What effects does smoking have on the respiratory system?
Smokers have an increased risk for developing lung cancer and other respiratory diseases Emphysema is a disease that develops when tobacco smoke causes the walls of the alveoli to loose their flexibility, making breathing difficult Smoking a cigarette exposes the smoker to more than four thousand different chemicals The toxic substances in tobacco destroy the cilia and without cilia, cells can loose ability to move particles out of the respiratory system

9 Name at least 3 disorders & provide a description:
Asthma- a disease affecting the airways that carry air to and from your lungs Acute Bronchitis- inflammation of the airways, it is caused by viral infections or exposure to irritants Pneumonia- inflammation of the lungs caused by bacteria, viruses, or chemical irritants
