Sharing Knowledge Outline Nine (9) Qualities of Effective Leaders

NINE (9) QUALITIES OF EFFECTIVE LEADERS

Quality 1 – Having A Clear Vision Having a clear view of the future, of all the different objectives that must be achieve to get there

Quality 2 – Having Clear Values Stand on clear values and solid principles Maintaining and upholding integrity always This, in turn will inspire others to follow in the same footsteps

Quality 3 – Knowledgeable Well versed with all the essential knowledge including the tasks; responsibilities; resources location as well as allocation; and the way the organisation works in relation to its environment

Quality 4 – Able to Inspire Provide an engaging vision which inspire others into action Able to show subordinates the good things that they are capable of Able to tap subordinates strengths, of which they themselves do not know existed Able to uncover and develop subordinates potentials

Quality 5 – Able to Lead by Example Effective leaders set good example for others to follow Their words and behaviors are consistent with each other Example they set, generate trust hence, easier to follow

Quality 6 – Take the Responsibility Effective leaders accept total personal responsibility for every thought, action and result. Never complain or blame others

Quality 7 – Courageous Effective leaders are brave They have the courage to do the right thing They have the courage to make decisions They are not afraid of taking calculated risks and they handle their fear well

Quality 8 – Able to Create A Spirit of Cooperation and Collaboration Cooperation is the key – able to show people that you care for them and always maintain strong networking connection Next is collaboration – the ability to work together with others who are usually outside your circle of control

Quality 9 – Continuously Improve Always look for opportunities to continuously improve themselves, their subordinates and their organisations Believe in adding value whenever and wherever they can

Followers’ View of Effective Leadership Think explicitly about their leadership role Develop awareness and self-belief Focus externally – listen, support, provide feedback and coach Display integrity in decision making and take decisions Share information Confident enough to make mistakes, admit mistakes and learn from mistakes Direct coaching Delegate authority as well as responsibility (The Effective Leader – Rupert Eales-White)

Followers view of Ineffective Leader Does not listen to staffs Failed to delegate Showed no interest in staffs Does not respect staffs Gave feedback to a third party Does not give praise when praise is due Showed favoritism – one rule for one, another for others Closed-mindedness Criticized staffs in front of others Took personal credit for staffs ideas Always taking control (micro manage) Bully staffs Does not give staffs the tools to do the job Does not keep staffs informed Does not set clear objectives (The Effective Leader – Rupert Eales-White)

The more I think of it … the more I realize that it is a huge responsibility in being a leader… That is why I am motivated to be a follower for ever and ever …
