Who is Sigmund Freud? He was an Austrian physician who revolutionized ideas on how the mind works. He established that unconscious motives control much of the human behavior ( sleep and dreams.)

His Life Born on May 6th 1856 and deceased 1939 He was the oldest out of 8 children When he was 4 years old his family had moved to Vienna , the capital of Austria. He later graduated from the medical university of Vienna in 1881 then decided to specialize in neurology .

His Life continued.. In 1885 he went to Paris to study under Jean Martin Charcot , who was a famous neurologist. In 1886 went back to Vienna with his wife and children to open and his own place and work with the ill. It was in 1923 that he learnt he had cancer in his mouth and that same year the Nazis took over Austria , that’s when Freud moved his family to England for they were Jewish . He lived there for a grand total of 16 years before he died, cause was the cancer in the mouth.

His theory on behavior.. He believed that people behaved mostly when they were unconscious ( sleeping) , and believed that this played an important role in behavior. He came to the conclusion that unconscious behavior is full of childhood memories and if the memories were especially painful the people would keep them out of conscious awareness ( defense mechanisms) which Freud discovered.

Continued… Sigmund believed that this is how people handled the painful memories. Also to form defense mechanisms he thought the people had to use a vast amount of energy. He came to the conclusion that the childhood memories had to deal with sex or sexual abuse from a parent. He believed that the reports of his patients sexual abuse were fantasies reflecting unconscious desires.

More … Freud said that the sexual functioning begins at birth and each person goes through several sexual development stages before becoming fully developed. He also believed that a person could be interrupted in his or her development and become fixated on sex or sexual contact at an earlier more immature age and this could cause a serious illness.

The Mind Freud divided the mind into 3 parts: id, ego and super ego. There were various instincts that he had , the need to satisfy sexual desires and the need to be aggressive.

I.D… The desire for sexual pleasure. Such as performing sexual acts , having sexual contact with another person or even talking about sex. Anything to help the sexual desire.

The ego… He believed that this resolves conflicts between instincts and external reality Determines socially appropriate ways to obtain physical satisfaction or to express aggression.

Super Ego A person’s conscience Ideas of right and wrong learned by parents, teachers Super ego might oppose angry behavior Super ego and the I.D would clash which would cause physiological disturbances.
