Engineering and Technology Board . Engineering UK – some facts. Children appear to form strong attitudes towards occupations at an early age. Intervention early in Primary education is critical in creating more positive attitudes towards Science and Technology. To increase uptake of STEM careers all stakeholders need to recognise the need for interventions designed to interest and enthuse young people, especially females, at a younger age.

STEM Ambassadors – HOW IT WORKS? Promote the value of STEM subjects to young learners. Help to build awareness about the importance of STEM in everyday life. Show the practical application of STEM in a range of business contexts. Help to make young people aware of STEM career potential and routes– personal anecdotal evidence is a powerful tool. Help to remove popular STEM gender stereotypes.

The wonder of STEM.

Benefits. Increased knowledge for teachers and pupils including a greater understanding of STEM applications. Personal development [CPD]. Personal stories – pupils who experienced a STEM Ambassador activity at school, became qualified and are now STEM Ambassadors themselves. Potential increase in future STEM workforce. Investment in local communities.

What works in Cumbria? Big Bang Science & Engineering events. Nuffield Research Projects. CREST Awards. Speed Networking. Technology Challenges – customised for schools. Robotics workshops. Customised STEM activities for individual schools. FIRST LEGO League Teacher – Ambassador Networking sessions. Engineering Your Future. STEM Clubs.
