6 Developing the Young Workforce
As a core part of the curriculum from 3-18, children and young people will learn about the world of work, job possibilities and the strengths and skills needed for work. They will find out about: their personal attributes, preferences and sense of self the concept of work (including entrepreneurship, social enterprise and self-employment) skills and experiences which relate to a range of jobs and careers diversity and equity where to find help and careers information routes into further training, learning, apprenticeships and work.

7 Our starting point Learner conversations identified a lack of aspirations for children Children only aware of a limited number of jobs Some children saying ‘I’ll probably be excluded like my older brother’

8 Our Journey World of Work Committee (WOW) Committee established in school Children targeted for this group – SIMD/LAAC/lowest and highest 20%

9 Careers Conference Careers Conference organised in sessions and Networking breakfast for WOW committee Range of jobs – awareness of ensuring gender equality Parents invited in for a workshop on careers WOW committee has developed a Careers Motto for the school

10 The Power of WOW ‘To know about the jobs we can get’
‘I want to be an entrepreneur and before WOW I didn’t know this job existed and would never have been able to become one.’ ‘The WOW helps the younger children to understand. If we teach them from Primary 1 then they’ll have a better understanding before going to secondary.’ ‘ It helps us to know what different jobs means and the skills you need.’ ‘You have to be ambitious about your future and never give up. Always keep going. If I try one day and it doesn’t work out then I should keep going and it will all work out.’ ‘All the teachers are helping to teach us about jobs. It helps us quite a lot and has helped me change my mind about what I want to be in the future.’ ‘The WOW has inspired us to think more about jobs that make you go WOW’

11 World of Work Wednesday

I now know I want to be a children’s doctor. It makes me more relaxed knowing what I want to do.’ Amanda ‘It makes me more confident about the different jobs for the future. I now want to be an entrepreneur.’ David ‘It was really good because it made me think about what I want to be . I want to be a councillor’ Abi ‘It gave me a big range of jobs for when I’m older. I want to be a pilot.’ Abdi ‘It made me realize that I can change my mind about jobs and I have options for the future.’ Rayan

18 Staff feedback ‘Coding club was a great success. Instead of just using scratch I will build in time to work on lego projects’ ‘A focus on skills from early in the year would put children in a good position for this week. Something I will include for the start of the session’ ‘Try to do more career based activities throughout the year’
