History of Soccer Soccer is the most common sport played in more countries than any other sport. Soccer is believed to have originated in Greece or Rome, but its true origins are unknown. Soccer was commonly banned throughout Europe because of its prevention of the practice of archery. Although many countries banned the playing of soccer, it quickly spread and became popular around the world. Soccer is played in 132 countries world wide.

Taking Care of Soccer Equipment Each day after class, place all soccer balls in equipment bags. When using scrimmage vests, do not rip them. After class return them to the mesh bag. Make sure all cones are in the tennis shed at the end of each day.

Soccer Safety When passing, make sure ball is passed below shoulder level. When heading the ball, use the edge of your forehead, where your hairline starts. If glasses must be worn, they should be covered with goggles or contain unbreakable lenses. Slide tackling is not allowed during Niles North gym classes.

Techniques Kicking Push Kick- use the inside back of the foot, near the heel. Instep Kick- use the front of the foot, near the inside of the laces of the shoe. Chipping- a short pass that is lofted off the ground. Volley Kick- a pass that is made where the ball and foot contact in the air. Lobbying or Lofting- when a pass comes off the ground. Back Kick- use the back of heel to pass the ball backwards.

Techniques Trapping- used to control a received pass. Chest Trap – Use the area of your chest where your breast bone is located. Curve your back to absorb the momentum the ball. Thigh Trap – Let ball fall down onto thigh as thigh moves down slowly to absorb momentum. Used for lofted passes. Shin Trap – Used for a fast pass that is slightly lofted. Put feet together and let ball come to shins. Foot Trap – Used for slower passes that are not lofted. Turn foot side ways and absorb the ball with your instep.

Techniques Passing – Used to move ball from one player to another. Most commonly used with a push kick. Dribbling – Moving the ball forward using small kicks from one foot to the other. Heading – Using your head to trap or move the ball. Make contact with ball at hairline. Throw In – Using two hands, bring ball over head and throw down towards the feet of the person receiving the pass.

Defensive Objectives Prevent opposing team from scoring a goal. Prevent completion of passes by the offensive team. Force the player attacking with the ball to move towards the outside of the field, hopefully kicking it out of bounds. Gain control of the ball and pass to offensive players. Staying spread out in order to have control of entire field.

Offensive Objectives Good ball control. Completion of all passes. Get around defensive line up and score a goal. Pass to open players only in order to maintain possession of the ball. If forced to corners, try and make the defensive players kick ball out of bounds to uphold possession. Staying spread out in order to have control of entire field.

Rules of the Game 11 players on the field for each time at one time. Goal Keeper- covers goal and tries to prevent other team from scoring. Only player who can contact ball with hands. Full Backs/ Defenders- prevent ball from getting to goal keeper. Protect the quarter of the field closest to the goal keeper. Half Backs/ Midfielders- Help defenders as well as forwards. Cover the middle half of the field. Forwards- Score most of the goals. Cover the offensive half of the field.

Rules of the Game Start of game: Kick off in the center of the field. Each player remains on their half of the field. Team that is not kicking off must remain outside of the center circle at all times. The first kick must pass the center line. Kicker must only touch the ball one time.

Rules of the Game Drop Ball Ball in and out of play Scoring Used to restart the game after it is temporarily stopped for things such as an injured player. Ball in and out of play In play when it rebounds from a goal post or if it touches the line. Out of play when it completely crosses over goal line or touch line. Scoring A point is scored when the ball completely crosses over goal line inside of the net.

Rules of the Game Offsides Throw Ins When a pass is made to a player who is in front of less than two players of the opposing team (including the goalie). Throw Ins Made when the ball crosses over the touch line. Both feet must remain contact with the ground at all times. Fouls for which a direct free kick is awarded: Goal Keeper touches ball outside of penalty box. Holding an opponent. Pushing an opponent.

Rules of the Game Fouls for which a direct free kick is awarded (cont.): Striking an opponent. Kicking an opponent. Tripping an opponent. Charging an opponent from behind. Jumping at an opponent. Charging the goal keeper in the penalty area. Fouls for which an indirect free kick is awarded: Touching the ball before another player touches it after a throw in. When a ball is not kicked forward on a penalty kick.

Rules of the Game Fouls for which an indirect free kick is awarded (cont.): Goal Keeper carrying the ball for more than four steps. Goal Keeper delays in getting rid of the ball. Dangerous Play. Offside. Interfering with a goal keeper. Obstruction other than holding. Fouls for which a penalty kick is awarded: Hand ball by the defensive team in the penalty box.

Rules of the Game Goal Kick – used when the offensive team kicks ball over the goal line. Kicked from corner of goal box. Penalty Kick- used for fouls discussed previously. Taken from penalty dot located inside penalty box. Corner Kick- used when defensive team kicks ball over the goal line. Kicked from corner of the field by offensive team.
