Past Tense – Verb “To Be” I/He/She/It - was You/We/They - were Use “to be” with born – I was born in 19….. Never use “to be” with die – She died in 2005. Use “to be” with adjectives that end in ed (past participles) – She was tired. They were worried. He wasn’t bored yesterday.

Past Tense – Regular Verbs Add – ed I waited. He jumped. She worked every day.

Irregular Verbs Type 2 – Verbs Ending in “d” Verbs ending in “d” switch to “t” for the past tense: Bend – Bent Build – Built Lend – Lent Send – Sent Spend - Spent

Past Tense – Negatives & Questions Use “did” and the base form for negative statements and for question statements. He went for lunch. She didn’t eat lunch. Where did you go for lunch? Why didn’t you bring lunch?

Habitual Past – “Used To” Don’t use Habitual Past for something that only happened one time or just a few times. I used to walk to school every day (happened maybe 800 times). I drove to school 8 times in grade 12. (it only happened a few times thus simple past). The /d/ sound is silent in “used to”
