Page Symbols Graphic Communication Higher DTP Crop Mark TRIM BOX Crop Mark Crop marks or corner marks indicate the edge of the trimmed page. They are typically used when printing to a larger sheet of paper and indicate where to cut the paper. CROP MARKS REGISTRATION MARK Trim Box The final size of a printed page after excess edges have been cut off is the trim size. Crop marks indicating where to cut are printed at the edges of the paper that are then trimmed after printing. BLEED AREA

Page Symbols Graphic Communication Higher DTP Registration Mark TRIM BOX Registration Mark A cross-hair target symbol placed outside the page area to provide a guide for the commercial printer when printing multicolour work. Each register mark should overprint exactly for accurate registration. The register marks are located outwith the page size and are removed when the publication is trimmed. Can also be shown as below with squares. CROP MARKS REGISTRATION MARK BLEED AREA

Page Symbols Graphic Communication Higher DTP Bleed Area TRIM BOX CROP MARKS Bleed Area To bleed is to extend an artwork graphic or photographic frame beyond the trimmed edge of the page. The bleed is the amount by which the image extends beyond the trimmed edge - commonly 3mm. REGISTRATION MARK BLEED AREA

Page Layers Graphic Communication Higher DTP Page layers can help organise your document or promotional item. Using this approach allows you to; Edit text and images separately Turn off layers for clarity Reorder layers (front to back, back to front) Create masks for elements (FAB logo)

Typeface Graphic Communication Higher DTP The choice of font is very important. Fonts fall into two main groups: serif fonts and sans-serif fonts. Serif refers to the ‘flick’ added to fonts. Sans-serif fonts don’t have this ‘flick’. Sans means without in french!

Drop Caps Graphic Communication Higher DTP A drop cap is a decorative element typically used in documents at the start of a section or chapter. It's a large capital letter at the beginning or a paragraph or text block that has the depth of two or more lines of normal text

Pull Quote Graphic Communication Higher DTP A pull quote is a key phrase, quotation, or excerpt that has been pulled from an article and used as a graphic element, serving to entice readers into the article or to highlight a key topic

Drop Shadow Graphic Communication Higher DTP Creating emphasis by making an image stand out in a layout is an important feature of graphic design. Using drop shadow is a common method for achieving this. Advantages Creates visual impact and emphasis Lifts the image off the page Gives the impression of depth

Flow Text Along a Path Graphic Communication Higher DTP Text can be made to flow along a line. The line is called a path. This can add contrast to a rectangular or linear layout. Advantages Creates visual impact Brings contrast to a rectangular layout Curves can suggest movement on a page

Text Wrap Graphic Communication Higher DTP Text wrap is a feature supported by many word processors that enables you to surround a picture or diagram with text. The text wraps around the graphic Text wrap does 3 things Creates flowing, curved shapes that contrast with the rectangular shapes in the layout Connects the text closely with the object it is wrapped around and creates unity Creates more space in a busy layout

Bleed Graphic Communication Higher DTP When any image or element on a page touches the edge of the page, extending beyond the trim edge, leaving no margin it is said to bleed. This is usually 3-5mm beyond the final/cut size. A print effect in which a colour, object or image appears to run off the edge of the page

File Types - Raster Graphic Communication Higher DTP Raster graphics are digital images that have been created or captured into a digital format. When enlarged, individual pixels appear as squares. In computer graphics, a raster graphics image is a dot matrix data structure, representing a generally rectangular grid of pixels, or points of colour, viewable via a monitor, paper, or other display medium .tiff .jpg .png .bmp

File Types - Vector Graphic Communication Higher DTP Vector graphics are created in graphics packages and consist of shapes called objects. It is possible to edit each object separately, for example, change the shape, colour, size and position. Even if an object in a vector graphic is quite large, it doesn't need a lot of computer memory. .svg .dxf
