Objective & Standard I can explain and analyze the concept of humanism and its impact on the Renaissance. SPI 7.46 Describe how humanism led to a revival of classical learning and fostered a new interest in the arts including a balance between intellect and religious faith.

Humanism During the Middle Ages, most thinkers in Europe had devoted themselves to religious study. By the 1300s, scholars had begun to broaden their interests. They studied poetry, history, and art, and Greek and Latin languages. These subjects are known as humanities because it was the study of human activities rather than the nature of God.

Humanism The study of humanities led to a movement called humanism. Humanism is a way of thinking and learning that stresses the importance of human achievements and actions. The interest in humanities was linked to rediscovery of ancient writings and the classical civilizations. Who do we refer to as the classical civilizations? Greeks and Romans How can learning about history change the way we look at the world?

Humanism In the 1300s Turks conquered much of the Byzantine empire. Byzantine Scholars seeking to escape the Turks fled to Italy. Why Italy? Many of the works they brought to Italy were ancient classical writings. Classical scholars began to rediscover the glories of Greece and Rome. ……they longed for a renewal of classical culture Classical- ancient Greek or Rome

Humanist Writers Humanist writers began writing in the vernacular, the everyday language people spoke. Why is this important? Many more people could read works written in the vernacular. ***Art, literature, and education should be available to everyone.

Humanist Writers The Father of Humanism Petrarch Dante The Father of Humanism He studied ancient writings of the Greeks & Romans. “Sameness is the mother of disgust, variety the cure” This emphasizes the humanist idea of individualism-the belief that the individual is more important than the larger community. The Divine Comedy One of the world’s greatest poems. Written in the vernacular. Why is this important? It could be easily understood by all.

Humanism Renaissance artists and architects were also inspired by the past. Classical statues and ruins of ancient buildings still stood in Italy. The rise of Humanism during the Renaissance can be seen in paintings of the Renaissance. Let’s look at evidence in the paintings of the Renaissance…

Activity Instructions Read the document “Humanism and the Renaissance” to differentiate between the characteristics of art from the Middle Ages & the Renaissance. Complete the chart on the bottom of your notes sheets detailing the comparisons.

Analyze the Art Work As a team you will analyze the artwork to determine if it was created during the Middle Ages or the Renaissance. One person from each group, take a piece of colored paper from the crate. Draw a T-chart: Write the # of the art. M R
