Presentation transcript:

To what extent is the concept of “Universal Human Rights” a Western construct?

RELATIVISM vs. UNIVERSALISM

Relativism: In the context of global politics, the ethical theory of relativism suggests values to be culturally and individually determined. In a relativist view, global agreements on the most fundamental aspects of human life are hence difficult to achieve. Universalism: In the context of global politics, the ethical theory of universalism puts forward the notion of a universal human nature that transcends traditional boundaries of identity. In a universalist view, universal values are therefore possible. Examples?

What do we mean by Western construct?

International Human Rights: A Western Construct? Debating Human Rights: Universal or relative to culture? Are Human Rights Western? On dignity and whether the UDHR remains a place of refuge after 60 years Universal Declaration of Human Rights: http://www.un.org/en/udhrbook/pdf/udhr_booklet_en_web.pdf

Four pillars of the UDHR: Life, liberty & personal security: Articles 3-11 Rights in civil society: Articles 12-17 Rights in the polity: Articles 18-21 Economic, social & cultural rights: Articles 22-27

To what extent are human rights, as defined by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, a western construct? Create a presentation Keep your focus within your pillar, but have an overall answer to the guiding question Weigh both sides and be specific - use examples from different cultures! (Ex: Sharia law, honor killings, hate crime laws, consumer rights)
