3 History In 1942 26 nations pledged to fight together against the Axis Powers (Germany, Italy, Japan). By 1945 50 nations had rallied together and the United Nations (UN) came into existence The UN born out of a desire to respond to the enormous amount of human rights abuse which occurred in WWII

4 Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) 1948 -Document adopted by the United Nations which stated the basic rights and fundamental freedoms to which all human beings are entitled. First time that countries agreed on a comprehensive statement of inalienable human rights.

5 The Universal Declaration begins by recognising that ‘the inherent dignity of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world’. It declares that human rights are universal – to be enjoyed by all people, no matter who they are or where they live.

6 The Universal Declaration includes civil and political rights such as: The right to life Liberty Free speech and privacy Economic, social and cultural rights, like the right to social security, health and education.

7 Activity Read Youth version of UDHR Compare your list of human rights to this list Did the rights you identified match with the rights contained in the UDHR?

8 Discussion activity In which ethic framework does this declaration fit? Why?

Consider some ways you as a young person could make a difference to human rights abuse both here in Australia and globally.
