M.A.I.N. The long-term causes Definition How did it contribute to WWI? Militarism Militarism refers to a government's preference to invest heavily in its military, or to follow and celebrate the principles of military life or policy. Alliances An agreement of countries to assist the allied country when needed

M.A.I.N. cont’d Cause Definition How did it contribute to WWI? Imperialism The ideology that nations have the right and duty to expand their territorial possessions by colonizing other areas whether by peaceful or by violent means. Nationalism Patriotic feelings or efforts; ideology that a citizen should not only support the nation as a true patriot but also recognize that the nation is the greatest manifestation of a people’s identity

The Balkan Powder Keg Refers to the Balkans in the early part of the 20th century. In this time period there were a number of overlapping claims to territories and spheres of influence between the major European powers such as Russia and Austria- Hungary.

Austria-Hungary Militarism Willing to use their military as an ultimatum to Serbia Alliances The support of Germany encouraged their ultimatum Imperialism Did not want to lose their empire Nationalism Afraid of losing Bosnia and other parts of the empire

Serbia Militarism Willing to fight to get Bosnia Alliances The support of Russia encouraged them Imperialism Wanted to enlarge their territory Nationalism Willing to use terror for nationalist goals
