Hebrews 3:7-19 Keep A Soft Heart

Hebrews 3:7-19 The Illustration: Israel in the Wilderness (7-11, 16-19). The Exhortation: Watch Out for Apostasy (12-15)!

Hebrews 3:7-19 What is Apostasy?

Hebrews 3:7-19 Now the Spirit expressly says that in later times some will depart from the faith by devoting themselves to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons. 1 Timothy 4:1

Hebrews 3:7-19 And the ones on the rock are those who, when they hear the word, receive it with joy. But these have no root; they believe for a while, and in time of testing fall away. Luke 8:13

Hebrews 3:7-19 What is Apostasy? Can Christians Apostasize?

Hebrews 3:7-19 Interpretive Options: Believers who lose their salvation (but see Rom 8:35-39; John 10:27-29). False Christians who are mixed in with the church (but read the context closely). True Christians who forfeit eternal reward and the right to full participation in Christ’s coming kingdom.

Hebrews 3:7-19 For no one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Now if anyone builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw— each one’s work will become manifest, for the Day will disclose it, because it will be revealed by fire, and the fire will test what sort of work each one has done.

Hebrews 3:7-19 If the work that anyone has built on the foundation survives, he will receive a reward. If anyone’s work is burned up, he will suffer loss, though he himself will be saved, but only as through fire. 1 Cor 3:11-15

Hebrews 3:7-19 By rejecting this, some have made shipwreck of their faith, among whom are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan that they may learn not to blaspheme. 1 Timothy 1:19b-20

Hebrews 3:7-19 What is Apostasy? Can Christians Apostasize? How Does It Happen (12-13)? How Can We Avoid It (13a-14)?

Hebrews 3:7-19 Examine your heart. Remind yourself of truth. Engage in community. Practice gratitude.
