CCSSM – SMP Wordle
The Standards for Mathematical Practice Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them Reason abstractly and quantitatively Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others Model with mathematics Use appropriate tools strategically Attend to precision Look for and make use of structure Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning
SMP#1 Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them Productive Disposition – mathematics is worthwhile and useful. Problems that are interesting and intriguing, that have answers that are not obviously apparent
SMP#2 Reason abstractly and quantitatively Ability to translate from words to numbers and vise-versa The use of keywords should be avoided Reading level and English proficiency play an important role
SMP#3 Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others Ask “How do you know?” Students share the logic behind their answers Students evaluate each other’s reasoning Teacher participation is minimal
SMP#4 Model with mathematics Develop contexts that can be modeled with manipulatives/representations Students write problems with contexts that support operations
SMP# 5 Use appropriate tools strategically Judicious selection of tools (or no tool used) The “tools” could be pencil and paper, number lines, manipulatives, or representations.
SMP#6 Attend to Precision This not only refers to the accuracy of answers It includes the mathematical language used in the classroom by students and teachers. Mathematical lingo has to be used with precision.
SMP#7 Look for and make use of structure Students might use the structure of our number system to make calculations easier Students might apply properties, such as the Distributive Property, to make their work more efficient
