OHIO UNIVERSITY BOBCATS Developing a Dual Threat Quarterback By Scott “Izzy” Isphording Co-Offensive Coordinator Quarterbacks Coach

OHIO UNIVERSITY BOBCATS Dual Threat QB Build a Relationship “They don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.” Establish a Standard of Performance Enjoy the Process Control what you can control

OHIO UNIVERSITY BOBCATS QB Core Values Always Do the Right Thing (For the Team) Relentless Effort Be Positive Be Early

OHIO UNIVERSITY BOBCATS Dual Threat QB Do the Right Thing (For the Team) Have your team’s back, not your teammate’s back You are either part of the solution or part of the problem Every decision you make is either helping the team or hurting the team Discipline people with discipline thought produce discipline actions (Good Habits)

OHIO UNIVERSITY BOBCATS Dual Threat QB Relentless Effort Effort is what makes you talented. Be the best you can be – that will be good enough. Give 100% all the time. If you give 80% one day, you can’t give 120% then next day. That day is lost forever. Failure has nothing to do with winning and losing. Failure is looking back knowing you could have done more. Practice deliberately

OHIO UNIVERSITY BOBCATS Dual Threat QB Be Positive Enjoy the grind. Have a passion for the process. No excuses, whining, or complaining Don’t waste your energy on “Energy Vampires” Enthusiasm attracts people to you and where you are going Find a way to love your teammates Have fun and enjoy the ride Be Early

Poise Under Pressure (PUP) OHIO UNIVERSITY BOBCATS Dual Threat QB Poise Under Pressure (PUP) Types Teaching x Reps Competitive Group Outcome: To have the quarterback develop a feeling for moving in the pocket and making accurate throws from inside the pocket. Purpose: To practice moving quickly and correctly in the pocket off of player stimuli. Position(s): Quarterbacks Start: Snap Finish: Throw Equipment Needs: Minimum of 2 footballs Description / Mechanics: QB with ball stands as if in the gun. Three QB’s serving as defensive players stand 7 yards apart facing the QB with the ball. The middle “defensive QB” is directly in front of the QB with the ball. The three “defensive QB’s” will serve as a rush from the most common places a rush comes from -- straight up the middle and from the outside. Another QB stands downfield 15-20 yards and will serve as a receiver. Prior to the snap, coach will tell which “defensive QB” to rush and where to rush. Coach will also tell which WR is live. The QB with the ball takes a drop (usually 3 step). As he is dropping and/or at the completion of his drop, the “defensive QB’s” quickly alternate running directly at or to a side of the QB and swipe at the ball. He must avoid them making small steps always with his back foot first. Move within the pocket. At anytime during the rush, the QB serving as the receiver must raise his hands signaling for the ball. The QB with the ball must ready himself and deliver the ball as quickly as possible. Get 3-4 reps then alternate. Reminders: Keep a wide base. Always step with back foot first. When the QB is making the throw, the “defensive QB’s” need to avoid making contact with the throwing arm and hand to prevent hitting a helmet or other injury. Compliments: Defender Read – put a defender between WR’s and have him make a break toward one of the WR’s when the coach raises his hands. QB needs to read him and throw opposite Category E.D.D. x 1 / Week 1 / Month Tempo x Full Speed Tag Off Thud (No Cutting) Thud (Cutting) Tackle (QB Not Live) Tackle (QB Live) Other
