Healthy Behavior Outcome Make choices about drugs that support a healthy lifestyle.

Lesson Objectives The students will be able to: Identify appropriate and inappropriate reasons why a person would use a drug. Analyze the trends of drug use by reviewing data from the Ohio Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) to build positive group norms. Identify the negative social, physical and psychological impact of drug abuse. Examples include: relationships with others; in the community; the health of the user; academic success; and future goals, including job/career and finances. Analyze factors that contribute to drug use and how to combat them.

Review Worksheet: Talking About Drug Use What is a drug? Can drugs be helpful? How? Are a majority of teens using drugs? What are the consequences of taking an illegal or legal drug inappropriately? Provide reasons why some people abuse drugs and an alternative to combat each reason.

Are a Majority of Teens Abusing Drugs? The Ohio Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) provides data about teen health behaviors in Ohio. Let’s take a closer look and see how teens in Ohio are doing according to the 2013 Ohio YRBS findings.

How Many Ohio Youth… Drank alcohol in the past 30 days? Take a guess… Answer: 30% *That means 70% are currently not using alcohol.

How Many Ohio Youth… Used marijuana in the past 30 days? Take a guess… Answer: 21% *That means 79% are currently not using marijuana.

How Many Teens… Smoked cigarettes in the past 30 days? Take a guess… Answer: 15% *That means 85% are currently not smoking.

How Many Teens… Used heroin one or more times during their lifetime? Take a guess… Answer: 2% *That means 98% have never used heroin.

How Many Teens… Used prescription drugs recreationally? Take a guess… Answer: 13% *That means 87% are not abusing prescription drugs.
