Companion animals & Pets Is companion animal the same as a pet? Companion animals and pets essentially are the same. “Pet” is likely derived from the French word “petit”. What is a companion animal? & How is it different from livestock or a wild animal? These animals were often runts of family livestock and were raised by hand with special attention. The animals provided companionship and playmates for humans. These pets were given names and generally avoided slaughter.
