Dr. Bernhard Sünder AMS GmbH, Flöha 4. October UIC-518 Testing and Evaluation according to UIC-518 Project RoLa, Austria 2002

AMS Test & Evaluation UIC 518, 4. October Preface This document describes the tests and evaluations made in Austria in summer 2002 on freight wagons of Greenbrier Europe. Test and evaluation were made to achieve an official license. The intend of this document is not to give constructive details of freight wagons. No real results are presented which are from, or representative for the wagons under test. The data acquisition as well as the evaluation is described from the view of a test and evaluation engineer.

AMS Test & Evaluation UIC 518, 4. October UIC – International Union of Railways UIC is the worldwide organization for railway cooperation. It is active in all the fields involved in developing rail transport. UIC publishes leaflets, the UIC Codes UIC Code 518: –Testing and approval of railway vehicles from the point of view of their dynamic behavior - Safety - Track fatigue - Ride quality UIC on the web:

AMS Test & Evaluation UIC 518, 4. October Overview 1. Data Acquisition –64 dynamic channels: 8 Spider8 (HBM) –GPS: Garmin –Software BEAM (AMS) 2. Evaluation –Software jBEAM (AMS)

AMS Test & Evaluation UIC 518, 4. October Data Acquisition (I) 64 synchronous analog channels GPS (Garmin) 1200 values per channel per second 76,800 values per second in total Up to 1 hour per run Data Files up to 1 Giga Byte

AMS Test & Evaluation UIC 518, 4. October Data Acquisition (II) Datatransfer Spider – PC: Centronics EPP-Mode Realtime Dataprocessing by BEAM: –Reading the data from interface –Conversion binary values eng. units –Realtime display of groups of 18 channels in an oscilograph type chart

AMS Test & Evaluation UIC 518, 4. October Data Evaluation Using the software jBEAM from AMS Platform independent, Java-based Generating a section list of the route Detecting the offsets for different runs Analyzing data of the runs for each route All runs of one route are analyzed automatically with one mouse click!

AMS Test & Evaluation UIC 518, 4. October Generating the Section-List (a) Manually defining curves with 2 cursors Auto calculating the radius of curves On click appending curve start, end and radius to the curve-list Data Evaluation

AMS Test & Evaluation UIC 518, 4. October Generating the Section-List (b) Specials: Extracting only GPS data from 1GB data file xy-chart with a map as a scaled background image and GPS positions on top. Correct distance calculation by converting GPS to metric UTM coordinates. Data Evaluation

AMS Test & Evaluation UIC 518, 4. October Generating the Section-List (c) Data Evaluation Auto generation of UIC- conform section list from curve list. Auto generation of section list for reverse direction. Export of section list for manual changes. Comparison with official route data. Adding additional information.

AMS Test & Evaluation UIC 518, 4. October Offset Detection for each Data file Data Evaluation GPS-data of two runs are loaded and displayed on top of map. Detecting the 1st run offset according to the section list. Load GPS data for each run and runs offsets are calculated automatically.

AMS Test & Evaluation UIC 518, 4. October Analyzing Data for Route (I) Finish preparation by setting all parameters Include all files for this route and direction Enter/load list of sensor distances to GPS for auto correction Data Evaluation

AMS Test & Evaluation UIC 518, 4. October Analyzing Data for Route (II) Parameter dialog for running UIC- analysis as an auto sequence Data Evaluation

AMS Test & Evaluation UIC 518, 4. October Analyzing Data for Route (III) For each sensor define the type of Analysis List of calculations is defined by UIC-518. More than one calculation may be defined for sensors. Data Evaluation

AMS Test & Evaluation UIC 518, 4. October Analyzing Data for Route (IV) Click on start button Click on start button View the process View the process –Detecting section –Determine location of data in file –Loading data –Auto Analyze –See section position with markers on map Data Evaluation

AMS Test & Evaluation UIC 518, 4. October Analyzing Data for Route (V) Final Step: With one mouse click generate one page of protocol per defined calculation. 40 pages are created in less than a second! Data Evaluation

AMS Test & Evaluation UIC 518, 4. October Internationalization The UIC-518 Analysis is implemented in the jBEAM software multilingual: At present German and English is available.

AMS Test & Evaluation UIC 518, 4. October Conclusion With the described equipment the measurement and analysis tasks were solved in a tremendous short time. Specially the new developed UIC-components in the standard evaluation software jBEAM made available a fast and easy way of UIC-518 conform analysis. It was a pleasure for all persons involved in this project to work with the described equipment!
