What is Psychology? Psychology is defined as the scientific study of the behavior of individuals & their mental processes. Behavior-any action an organism does that can be observed. Mental processes-internal, subjective experiences we infer from behavior

4 Goals of Psychology: 1. Description: the kid at the candy aisle is having a melt down. 2. Explanation: he wants the pretty candy 3. Prediction: He will get the candy 4. Influence: Wal-Mart knows that moms have already lost patience with their kids by the time they get to the checkout line so they put the candy there to get the kids to wear mom down to buy the candy. Description: The first goal of any scientist or psychologist is to describe or gather information about the behavior being studied and to present what is known. Explanation: Psychologists are not content stating the facts we seek to explain why people or animals behave as such. We use the scientific method. Hypothesis: educated guess about some phenomenon. (Researchers prediction about what the resuts of a study are expected to be. Theory: A Complex explanation based on findings from a large number of experimental studies. Prediction: is to predict future behaviors Influence: Influence behaviors

1. Description Learning about psychology can help you gain… a better understanding of your own behavior. knowledge about how psychologists study human and animal behavior. practical applications for enriching your life. fotosearch.com Example: The child throws a fit every time he goes to Wal-Mart and his mom says no by the candy aisle.

2. Explanation Psychology is Empirical that means information is obtained through observation and experimentation not common sense or guessing. http://lewweb.net/science/images/SMflowchart.jpeg moisiadis.com

3. Prediction By accumulating knowledge we are able to predict what people or animals will do or think in certain situations and predict future behaviors.

4. Influence Scientist seek to influence behavior in helpful ways. knychfamily.blogspot.com Chains like Wal-mart have done these scientific observations and place candy as you check out because when your kid is screaming sometimes it is easier to just buy the candy bar.

Basic Research: pure science that aims to increase the scientific knowledge base Research Ex. Research on drug effects on the brain. Applied Research: Scientific study that aims to solve practical problems Example: Using research on how drugs effect the brain to come up with a new antidepressant to help people suffering from depression. There are two types of science that influences psychology.
