Scientific refers to the use of some experimental methods as other sciences. Experimental Method = Scientific Method 1) Problem/Question - Research 2) Formulate a Hypothesis 3) Experiment/Observation 4) Collect and Analyze Results 5) Conclusion

Human = Animal (i.e. – Electrical Stimulation)

4 Behavior: Any action that other people can observe or measure.
Psychology: The scientific study of human behavior and mental processes. Behavior: Any action that other people can observe or measure. Physical (sex characteristics, appearance, inborn drives) Cognitive Activities (thinking, problem solving, reasoning) Emotional States Social and Environmental Factors (society, family, cultural groups)

Mental Processes: private, unobservable mental processes (i.e. – sensations and perceptions).

Psychology covers everything that we THINK, FEEL and DO.

7 Goals of Psychology (Why Study Psychology?)
Describe – gather information about behavior and present what is known. Explain – explain why people act in certain ways. Predict – hypothesis based on accumulated knowledge. Control – influence or control behavior in helpful ways.

8 Types of Psychology Basic (or Research) Psychology
-study origin, cause or results of behavior. 2) Applied Psychology -make use of findings of basic psychology.
