What is a Ph.D.? The Ph.D. (in italian “Dottorato di ricerca”) is a post-graduate academic degree awarded by universities. In Italy, it is an academic title awarded at the end of a course of not less than three years, admission to which is based on entrance examinations. Post-graduate Ph.D. Programmes 16/11/2018

What is a Ph.D.? In order to be admitted to a Ph.D. programme, without age or citizenship limits, candidates must hold: an Italian university degree (4 years) an Italian university degree (3+2 years) an academic degree awarded by a foreign Institution or University, validated as equivalent to an Italian degree by the relevant academic authorities. Post-graduate Ph.D. Programmes 16/11/2018

What is a Ph.D.? The number of places on offer each year and details of the entrance examinations are set out in the “Call for application”, published every year in our Website. The Ph.D. is addressed to students whose main interest is high level research and it aims at preparing them to be employed in Universities, public corporations and private enterprises, equipped with research departments. Post-graduate Ph.D. Programmes 16/11/2018

What is a Ph.D.? In our University, a Ph.D. lasts three academic years. At the end of the programme, the Ph.D. student will have to defend his/her dissertation in front of an examination Committee and then he/she become a Dottore di Ricerca. It is possible to apply only for graduated students and after passing a competition. A foreign degree will be recognized just in order to be admitted to the Ph.D. course. Post-graduate Ph.D. Programmes 16/11/2018

The Three-Cycle System in Italy Post-graduate Ph.D. Programmes 16/11/2018

Promote every kind of activities, events and services for Ph.D. and foreign students. Post-graduate Ph.D. Programmes 16/11/2018

Ph.D. Courses Admission rules are based on different policies, depending on the specific course of study: free access (for an unlimited number of students) but with mandatory entrance test restricted access (for a limited number of students, as specified each year in the “Call for application”). The prevalence of the courses belongs to the Doctoral Schools, currently 20. Post-graduate Ph.D. Programmes 16/11/2018

Doctoral Schools The Doctoral Schools are structures whose objective is the promotion, organization and management of all activities connected to their research doctorates on the basis of consistent, generally accepted cultural features realized through uniform survey methods and training paths. Such Doctoral Schools are responsible for the coordination, innovation and control of the teaching and scientific activity of each single doctorate. The Schools are also responsible for determining what doctorates to run on a yearly basis and to ensure their uniformity according to consistent, logical and economical criteria. Post-graduate Ph.D. Programmes 16/11/2018

INTERNATIONAL PH.D’S PROGRAMMES Mainly, there are three different type of activities: Call for Applications to fellowships and admission of Foreign Nationals Educated Abroad Agreement for joint research Doctoral Thesis Inter-Institutional Agreement for International PhDs Post-graduate Ph.D. Programmes 16/11/2018

Call for Applications to fellowships and admission of Foreign Nationals Educated Abroad The University of Rome “La Sapienza” offers some three year full-time post-graduate PhD positions with fellowship for attaining the degree of “Dottore di Ricerca” (Ph.D.) in the Doctoral Schools. Post-graduate Ph.D. Programmes 16/11/2018

Post-graduate Ph.D. Programmes 16/11/2018

Selection and admissions Applications will be evaluated on the basis of some documents. Successful applicants will be assigned to a Doctoral School. Post-graduate Ph.D. Programmes 16/11/2018

Attainment of Ph.D. Students must attend the courses and the seminars offered by their Programme, pass the related examinations, and prepare a Ph.D. final defense, which must have original results. The Ph.D. title is obtained at the end of the third year, after the candidate dissertation and its positive evaluation made by an independent Jury appointed by the Rector. The defense may be delayed with the approval of the School authorities, but not for more than one year. Post-graduate Ph.D. Programmes 16/11/2018

Ph.D. Thesis "En-Cotutelle" The "Co-tutelle de Thèse" is a useful opportunity to improve and enforce the international dimension of doctoral studies. The key feature of this program is that PhD students can carry out their doctoral course and their research projects in part in the foreign country institution and in part in this University, under the joint supervision of two supervisors (one for each university involved). It allows the students to achieve a degree in both universities partners and to obtain an academic degree valid in both countries after spending a period of study and research abroad . Post-graduate Ph.D. Programmes 16/11/2018

Ph.D. Thesis "En-Cotutelle" The Co-tutelle is activated after the approval of the Commission of the single Ph.D. Course, during the first year but the Academic Board may approve it even for PHD students enrolled in the 2nd year of the course for thesis of particular scientific interest. In this case, the Academic Board must also approve one academic year of extension for the defense of the thesis. Post-graduate Ph.D. Programmes 16/11/2018

Ph.D. Thesis "En-Cotutelle" It is possible to set up a co-tutoring Doctorate with any foreign academic Institution. Post-graduate Ph.D. Programmes 16/11/2018

Ph.D. Thesis "En-Cotutelle" FRANCE ARGENTINA GERMANY AUSTRALIA SPAIN CHILE CROAZIA CHINA PORTUGAL MEXICO BELGIUM TUNISIA NETHERLANDS USA …and many more… Post-graduate Ph.D. Programmes 16/11/2018

INTER-INSTITUTIONAL AGREEMENTS FOR INTERNATIONAL PHD COURSES Following the guidelines of Bologna Process in 1999, Sapienza University started the path toward the internationalization of doctoral programs, aware of the importance of the strategic role that Ph.D. plays in the creation of high level and competitive researchers. Sapienza Commission for PhD – in collaboration with Ph.D. Office and the Division for International Relations - has worked to provide flexible tools to facilitate the launch of new Institutional AGREEMENTS aimed at promoting International Ph.D. courses Post-graduate Ph.D. Programmes 16/11/2018

INTER-INSTITUTIONAL AGREEMENTS FOR INTERNATIONAL PHD COURSES In order to facilitate the process of internationalization - and also to monitor it - the Commission has approved a new draft for Inter-Institutional Agreements for International joint PHD Courses. According to the specific agreements signed by partner institutions, joint doctoral programs can also lead to a joint PhD degree or to a degree awarded separately by two or more institutions partner (double / multiple degrees). The specific aspects of the programmes, such as a joint call for application, exams of admission, training and final defence of the PhD thesis until the issue of a joint degree are pointed out in the agreement which is very versatile and may have many uses and applications. It can be easily adapted to the rules and regulations of the partner universities. Post-graduate Ph.D. Programmes 16/11/2018

The Doctor Europaeus designation The Confederation of European Union Rectors’ Conferences (today EUA – European University Association) has drawn up a common ”European doctorate” brand. Students who are interested in applying for this label must ask the Ph.D. Coordinator for the procedure.  This designation can be added to a national doctorate, which was obtained fulfilling four conditions. Post-graduate Ph.D. Programmes 16/11/2018

The Doctor Europaeus designation The Ph.D. defense will be accorded if at least two professors from two higher education institutions of two European countries, other than the one where the Ph.D. thesis will be defended, have given their judgment concerning the manuscript. At least one member of the jury should come from a higher education institution in European countries, other than the one, where the Ph.D. thesis will be defended. Part of the defense must take place in one of the official languages, other than the one’s of the country, where the Ph.D. thesis will be defended. The Ph.D. thesis must partly have been prepared as a result of a period of research of at least one trimester spent in another European country. Post-graduate Ph.D. Programmes 16/11/2018
