US SCHOOL SYSTEM
General Facts Education mainly controlled by government Course work varies by state and school lasts until age 18 all children MUST attend school until age 18 or completion of a high school diploma 8:00 AM and end around 3:00 PM, and serve lunch public schools are “free” September to end of May, 1-2 weeks for Winter & 1 week for Spring break Grade scale: A, B, C, D, F, – or +
Pre-School & Kindergarten some start before kindergarten at age 5 (pre or nursery school) kindergarten begins at age 5 or 6
Elementary (Primary) School 1st grade – age 6/7 2nd grade – 7/8 3rd grade – 8/9 4th grade – 9/10 5th grade – 10/11 students have 1 teacher, 1 classroom, and the same classmates for a year
Middle School 6th grade – 11/12 7th grade – 12/13 8th grade – 13/14 students move from class to class each period, with a new teacher and a new mixture of students Students select from a wide range of classes
High School!! 9th grade FRESHMEN – 14/15 10th grade SOPHOMORE – 15/16 11th grade JUNIOR – 16/17 12th grade SENIOR – 17/18 more subjects than before, students must earn a certain number of credits (completed courses) to graduate with a High School Diploma Travel between classrooms and teachers during a 7 hour day (8 to 3) Some do sports after school music classes
Education after High School SAT and ACT determine which university one may attend college = university state universities private universities tech schools community colleges on-line degrees Some go on to earn a Masters, PH, or DR degree
