1 THE AMERICAN EDUCATION SYSTEM

2 BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Each of the fifty states has its own Department of Education that sets guidelines for the schools of that state. School Districts control public schools. School Districts are divided into: Elementary Schools Middle Schools High Schools

3 Education in the United States is compulsory for all students until ages sixteen to eighteen depending on individual state. The system requires 12 years of primary and secondary education prior attending university or college.

4 PRIMARY SCHOOL American children start school at the age of five or six according to state. First year is called Kindergarten. Second year is considered as First Grade. Primary School commonly consists of five years of education – first through fifth grades.

5 SECONDARY SCHOOL It consists of a total of seven years – sixth grade to twelfth grade. Ninth grade through twelfth grades are commonly referred to as High School. Upon completion of twelfth grade, american students are awarded the High School Diploma.

6 UNDERGRADUATE SCHOOL Students who complete high school and would like to attend college or university must attend an undergraduate school. These institutions offer: A two-year degree (Associate Degree) A four-year degree (Bachelor`s Degree)

7 GRADUATE SCHOOL Students who have obtained a bachelor’s Degree can continue their education by persuing one of the two types of degrees. Master’s Degree PH,D
