Better Accessible Transport to Encourage Robust Intermodal Enterprise Work Package 6 Dr John Harrison

Work Package 6 Deliver a web-based journey-planning tool to facilitate intermodal journeys across the Atlantic Area maximising the use of smart technology and alternative fuels Establish a journey through all of the regions, to test smart technologies and alternative fuels and more importantly to test how these provide an easy transition between modes of transport. Demonstrate best practice in making the smart technologies and various fuel sources available. BATTERIE - objectives

Work Package 6 Deliverable 1: Deliver a web-based journey- planning tool to facilitate intermodal journeys across the Atlantic Area maximising the use of smart technology and alternative fuels.

Work Package 6 Research and Identification of components Online research has been carried out into all of the existing journey planners; walk & cycle route planners; public transport planners Although most existing Journey planners have good functionality and some impressive features that would be relevant to BATTERIE No planner uses these features together effectively enough to detach itself from the competition The following are the main features which were found which can be incorporated within one planner to become dominant in its area

Work Package 6 Survey and findings During a recent survey between partners, the following results where found: The main characteristics of planning a journey are: Distance Time CO 2 emissions Cost. The most important factors highlighted for a user to effectively plan a journey is the time taken for a journey and the cost.

Work Package 6 Survey and findings In terms of what the journey planner should be able to do for the end user, we found: That all transport forms should be taken into consideration to provide a truly intermodal journey planner. Real time information should be provided for public transport such as arrival time of buses which would change depending on delays. Location and information on cycling rental stations should be provided. Different criteria should be available to combine and compare e.g. time against co2 emissions or co2 emissions against cost. Journey planner should provide efficient and consistent service across all regions.

Work Package 6 CO2 emission calculator This can be used to calculate the CO 2 saved by low carbon transportation as opposed to regular vehicles

Work Package 6 Calculation of elevation along route Many cycle or walking route planners allow users to calculate the varying elevation levels along the route. This feature allows you to scan over the elevation index to see what distance into the journey each point is. In BATTERIE a feature like this will be necessary for users due to the effect going uphill will have on the charge of a vehicle

Work Package 6 Real Time Data: eg. Live traffic reports Important for : Factoring in delays into your journey Impact that can have on next leg of journey For EVs my impact whether or not you get to the next charging point

Work Package 6 Ability to select from variety of routes These options will include the quickest route, the quietest route or the route covering the least amount of distance. This feature can be tailored for BATTERIE e.g. offering users the choice to avoid traffic, go a longer distance around high elevations etc. More freedom to decide how to plan their trip

Work Package 6 Let the user compare the different route options simultaneously in real time

Work Package 6 Stepping stones for the BATTERIE journey planner from here Step 1:Have a fully functioning journey planner with basic features Step 2: Map out all of the charging post locations & refuelling points for low carbon transport Step 3: Run a test journeys within Ireland to raise awareness and test basic functionality. Step 4:Add key features to journey planner such as elevation, co2 calculation, traffic reports etc. Step 5: Rollout journey planner for Partner Regions in the Atlantic Area

Work Package 6 Intermodal Transport – The Platform

Work Package 6 Intermodal Transport– The Future In certain areas, "multimodal" transportation is already a reality. In cities people walk, take the subway, grab taxi, and walk some more. Now we're seeing the beginning of what's called intelligent multimodal transportation. Smart phones allow us to instantly rent a bike, instantly car share with someone just a mile up the road, find out exactly when the bus is coming bus. You will not phone a taxi any more you will hit a button on your phone

Work Package 6 Future outlook for BATTERIE Better Planning Suitable Platform All Transport

Work Package 6 Future outlook for BATTERIE When the fully functioning journey planner is up and running we will be moving onto communications between the journey planner and the charging posts. We look for this ability to provide information such as the energy consumption of the post on a daily basis and the availability of the charging post. We would also aim to be looking into the ability to reserve charging posts through an online booking system. This will improve the ability of our journey planner to provide more exact times of departure and arrival and mean the user can plan a route more precisely than they would have done without the ability to reserve. If this becomes unique to BATTERIE, it will ensure a large user base. The next step for BATTERIE will be looking at the intermodal side of things and ensuring that users can plan a journey taking into account public transport.

Work Package 6 Defined search within radius of selected route Some existing journey planners have the ability to search for points of interest within a certain distance of the selected route. Let users view charging posts and refuelling points within a certain distance from their route e.g. all charging posts within 1 mile. More freedom to decide how to plan their trip
