on Creating a Student Driven Team

What does a Student Driven Team look like? There are active student captains/co-captains Student leaders help to organize and run events Mentors are there for guidance, they don’t run the show Student run meetings, mentors are participants/supervisors

Who’s Involved in Creating a Student Driven Team? Your mentors Your team members You!

Dealing with your Mentors Mentors should encourage leadership Students in charge = less work for mentors Invite students into leadership roles, don’t expect people to just ‘step up’ A leadership role should look welcoming, not intimidating

Dealing with your Mentors Mentors are to embrace teaching roles Returning alumni, transition from member to mentor Mentors help mentors Never leave a mentor working alone, stick them with a student or three Encourage mentors to take on teaching opportunities

Getting your Students Involved Students in leadership roles encourage continuity ‘Who are you training to replace you?’ Build confidence in younger members Push them to their ‘learning edge’ Captains don’t run everything!

Getting your Students Involved Student members should feel like they are valued Comfortable contributing to conversations and team projects Opinions aren’t immediately dismissed by senior member or mentors Questions are welcome, they know who to go to for clarification and advice Create constructive busy work

What Can You Do? As a student, As a mentor, Don’t be afraid to step up Initiative is a good thing! As a mentor, Be an example for your other mentors If you see potential leadership in a student, foster it!
