Grant Committee Report Grants Committee Chairperson: Bryce Henderson

As open-water lifesavers, our MISSION is to promote Beach Safety awareness and Professional Lifeguard standards through public education, training programs, exchange programs, junior lifeguard programs, competition and other means. The CSLSA’s mission is what needs to be taken into consideration when thinking of applying to any funding opportunities.

Funding Options/Opportunities CSLSA Public Private 501(c)3 Non-Profit Organization As a 501(c)3 organization, the CSLSA has an advantage when it comes to various types of grants and funding. However, depending upon factors both within our organization and the constraints. With 30 chapters to keep in mind, the need for a strategic approach to applying for said funding is necessary as to avoid miscommunication and.

Public DHHS- http://www.hhs.gov/grants/grants/index.html A searchable database available for various first responders FEMA- https://www.fema.gov/welcome-assistance-firefighters-grant-program This grant is for Firefighter orgs, but nonaffiliated Emergency Medical Services (EMS) organizations can also be included Department of Homeland Security  http://www.firstresponder.gov/SitePages/GrantsAndTraining/Grants.aspx?s=Grants Through DHS, there are grants that are provided through state agencies

FY2016 Assistance to Fire Grant (AFG) Sponsored by FEMA $310 Mn Available for 2,500 awards Proposed Projects/ Narrative can include: Fire Management and Suppression, Environmental Response/Health and Safety, Threats and Hazards Identification, Public Health, Healthcare, and Emergency Medical Services, Operational Coordination, Operational Communications, Mass Search and Rescue Operations, Community Resilience, Long-term Vulnerability Reduction I have registered and been approved for submitting an application for the award, but have not yet began the application until directed to do so The Assistance to Fire Grant is provided through FEMA and has up to 2500 awards for just over three hundred and ten million dollars. Although the topics here do cover operations that our individual departments may cover, I have been vacillating on whether-or-not we would be able to create a narrative. The main committee on the organization that I can see being a viable applicant would be the Training department. I will reach out to the training committee by this weekend to discuss potential options. The majority of public grants that I found were geared toward fire and first responder operations. There are a few that we could stretch to our training and maybe education but I would need to hash this out with various committee members.

Private Toyota Foundation Home Depot A general fund that accepts as many applications/proposals as are submitted in the application period, but only 250 proposals are selected to move forward in the process Applications don’t open again until March, I will revisit this with several committee members I have in mind Home Depot Community Impact Grants If we could think of a project that might improve a structure at the beach, this could be a feasible avenue to follow Most corporations have foundations as separate entities. It is typically a non-profit, or a charitable trust that allows the corporation to capitalize on tax policies that provide incentives for charitable giving.

Private These two opportunities have only been examples, there are grants for several of the major brand names that you can think of, varying in levels of competition. Many of the corporate grants are geared toward their particular industry (Tylenol- healthcare, Home depot- contracting/building), however we could try to apply our mission to some of these areas in supporting our operations. Most corporations have foundations as separate entities. It is typically a non-profit, or a charitable trust that allows the corporation to capitalize on tax policies that provide incentives for charitable giving.

Ideas By Committee

Let’s take a look From a funding perspective, what departments of CSLSA are going to be most appealing? Public Education Junior Lifeguards Public Relations Legislation Training I have done research into grants that could apply to these sections (to follow), but I need to communicate with the chairperson(s) in order to create a narrative for any applications.

Potential Options Public Education Coca Cola Public Space Recycling Grant Sponsor/Provides recycling cans in public areas Pros Good PR for the communities Cleaner Beaches Could also fall under Education Cons Is this appealing? Permits, municipal bureaucracies

Potential Options Junior Lifeguards Aligning our mission/vision Do we have programs for youth from underserved communities? If so. there might be a few options: Examples: FedEx “Employment Pathways” Grant Due: Rolling Applications Goal: FedEx Leveraging its reach to provide pathways to success for teens and young adults in underserved populations. Los Angeles? Bay Area? San Diego?

Potential Options Legislation Policy Development Are there public health issues within our scope/mission as an organization that could be attended to by policy that has yet to be passed or developed? Ideas: MacArthur Foundation It’s a long-shot, but they could have some funding available We could send a letter of inquiry if we have a valid social policy concern Example: Actionable Intelligence for Social Policy “Encourages social innovation and social policy experimentation so government can work better, smarter and faster.”

Task Items By October’s end, successfully contact committee chairs to brainstorm about possibilities for I will email all of the departments listed in this presentation thus far over the next couple of weeks to discuss options on filling out applications and developing projects By end of November, I will develop an Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) regarding applications for grants on behalf of CSLSA as an organization This will allow for a ‘checks and balances’ process per-se so, with the ultimate goal of the whole board having a a word in what funding we apply for

Ideas After researching over the past few months, I have realized I will need to coordinate with one, if not several, other committee members depending upon the grant Creating a narrative for an application is just as important as establishing budgets, a solid application, and general project structure As opposed to only checking in at the bi-annual meetings, I will begin contacting committee members on a monthly basis to coordinate in these efforts I would appreciate committee members to approach me with ideas

Thank you all for your time. Summary There are many potential funding opportunities available to CSLSA, depending upon the narrative we create. As I have outlined, I will be in contact with the listed committees by the end of the month. If you feel you have been overlooked, please do not take offense, go ahead and send me an email and we can go ahead and discuss various avenues to follow. Thank you all for your time.
