Aurora High School Semester System There are two semesters in a school year Semester 1: September to January Semester 2: February to June Students have four courses in each semester Exams will be written over 5 days All courses do not have exams All courses do have formal summative assessments

OSSD Requirements 18 Compulsory Credits 4 credits in English (1 credit per grade) 1 credit in French (Grade 9) 3 credits in mathematics (1 credit must be completed in Grade 11 or 12) 2 credits in science (Grade 9 &10) 1 credit in Canadian history (Grade 10) 1 credit in Canadian geography (Grade 9) 1 credit in the Arts (music, art, or drama) 1 credit in health and physical education ½ credit in civics and ½ credit in career studies (Gr. 10) Choose one course from Group 1, 2 and 3

Grade 9 Elective Credits Students must earn 12 elective credits (in courses of their choice) by the time they graduate Grade 9 students choose two electives from six possible choices: Grade 9 Elective Credits Visual Arts AVI1O1 Music Music Rep AMU1O1 AMR1O1 Dramatic Arts ADA1O1 or ADA1OF Individual and Family Living HIF1O1 Information and Communication Technology BTT1O1 or BTT1OF Exploring Technologies TIJ1O1

Community Involvement Activities Students must complete 40 hours of Community Involvement activities with a not-for-profit organization The Guidance Department records only the first 40 hours of Community Involvement Students may begin their Community Involvement hours the summer before they begin Grade 9 and are encouraged to complete their hours before entering Grade 11 Students must have their hours pre-approved by Aurora High School to ensure that they are participating in an eligible activity

OSSLT Students must be successful in the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT) which is written in the spring of your second year of high school This provincial test is a culmination of skills learned up to, and including, Grade 9

French Immersion Program A French Immersion Certificate is granted after the successful completion of ten French Immersion credits Students must be successful in the French Immersion French (FIF course) in Grades 9, 10, 11 and 12

Grade 9 Career Cruising Course Planner

Step 1 Go to YRDSB website at: www.yrdsb.ca Access to your course selection for Career Cruising is listed on the “Quick Tips Sheet for Career Cruising” in your registration package An online tutorial is available to view on the YRDSB website

Step 3 Using your unique username and password: Your username is the prefix ‘YORK-' + your Student ID (YORK-123456789). Your password when you first log in is your birth date (mm/dd/yyyy) You will be required to change your password after you first log in. Please put this password in a secure place, as you will need it several times during your high school career. Your password must be appropriate as Guidance Counsellors have access to it.

Step 3 Use your 9 digit code and your birthday (first time) or password to log in All students have a username and password. Career cruising is where students select their courses for secondary and throughout secondary school. Students can also access and keep track of their Individual Pathways Plan

Step 4 “Choose My Courses” (located above)

Step 5 Click on the plus (+) sign to choose a course

Step 6 Choose a pathway and click “Add Courses”

Step 7 Click the drop down arrow to choose the desired department

Step 8 - Click on the course to add to your planner - Click on “add courses” at the bottom of the page - To change a selected course before submitting, click on the course and then click “delete course” at the bottom - You MUST select two alternate elective courses to complete the process

Choose Once Choose Wisely! Once timetables are built, course changes will only be made for sound educational reasons Select courses that are appropriate for your abilities and interests

Review / Draft Copies Please review your selections with a parent or guardian before finalizing your course requests You can print a draft copy of your course requests by clicking on the printer icon at the top right You may start locking your courses into Career Cruising starting: Monday, February 12, 2018

Final Steps Click the “submit” button at the bottom of the column to electronically send your course selection Do not click submit until you are absolutely sure of your choices - changes after you submit are not possible without seeing an Aurora High School Guidance Counsellor Print your selection and have it signed by your parent/guardian
