THE INTERNET -Notes Presentation- Download the Internet –Notes from this weeks page of the teacher website. http://ramblingrhodes.mu.nu/archives/262818.html

I. The Internet and the World Wide Web The Internet = gigantic computer network that connects computers across the world. -Changed communication, working, shopping, fun, World Wide Web = It is a way of accessing the huge collection of information, services, and Web sites available through the Internet. Only one part of the Internet. Not the same as the Internet. Internet = Highway Web = Car (that lets you travel the highway)

II. Web Sites and Web Pages The Web is made up of Web Sites: Web Sites = specific location on the Web that contains a collection of related files and resources by a person, group, or organization. Web Sites are made up of Web Pages (sub pages) Book = Web Site Pages = Web Pages

III. URL – Uniform Resource Locator Homes and Businesses have addresses – so do Web Sites! This address is called a URL Unique, distinctive address for Sites and Pages http://www.cnn.com/weather HTTP – Hypertext Transfer Protocol The Domain Name -name of the website The Subpage Name -usually separated from domain name with slash

IV. Getting Connected Devices used to connect to the Internet is increasing daily! To connect with your computer: Need: 1. Computer 2. ISP 3. Modem 4. Communications Software (If Wireless – Need Wireless Router) 2. What is an ISP (Internet Service Provider)? Company that sells you access to the Internet, usually for a monthly fee. -ISP Examples: Insight, Windstream, BellSouth, AT&T

IV. Getting Connected Cont. 3. What is a Modem? Needed to connect computer to Internet. Modem = Lets your computer send data to and receive data from other computers or to a network. Manages Internet link/connection between user and ISP. Gives specific IP Address. (Internet Protocol) Bandwidth – or the rate of data transmission varies with each. Speed of data is measured in (Bits per second – bps) kilobits per second (Kbps) (thousands per second) Megabits (Mbps) (millions per second)

Types of Modems MODEM DESCRIPTION Telephone (or dial-up) Modem Connects your computer to the Internet using telephone lines. Slowest type - speed 56 kbps DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) Modem Uses telephone line to supply a high-speed Internet connection. Speed 8 to 24 Mbps Cable Modem Uses your cable television lines to supply a high-speed Internet connection. Speed 384 Kbps to 50 Mbps.

IV. Getting Connected Cont. 4. What is a Web Browser? Web Browser = Software program that lets you surf the Web and interact with Web sites. Ex. MS Internet Explorer, Netscape, Apple Safari, Mozilla Firefox, etc. -Make sure to have an updated version to access all websites! http://howhub.blogspot.com/2011/08/3-best-web-browsers-in-world.html

V. E-Mail Electronic Mail (e-mail) = Communication sent from one person to another, or to many, over the Internet. Several E-Mail Methods: -Software (Microsoft Outlook) -Web (Hotmail, Gmail, Yahoo!) -Hand Held Device (cell phone, PDA)

V. E-Mail Continued How does it Work? Message travels over Internet to a person’s unique e-mail address and each network has a unique domain name. Can pass through several different networks Process takes few seconds lilwayne@yahoo.com Domain Name – Identifies the e-mail provider User Name –identifies you Extension of the E-mail address

V. E-Mail Continued Important to Use Proper Netiquette -Refers to the good manners one uses in electronic communications. Remember – people can’t read your facial/verbal expressions through email. Spam = like junk mail – mail sent in bulk to many people’s e-mail accounts. Sent for one reason usually – sell you something! Take Steps to Avoid Spam: *Spam Filters *Don’t Open Emails from Un-known

“Don’t believe everything you read!” VI. Can I Trust the Web? “Don’t believe everything you read!” Important to Evaluate, or assess the value of, Web Sites with a critical eye!

How to Evaluate a Web Site Information Should Be.. Questions To Ask What to Look For Relevant Does your information relate to your topic? Use precise keywords in search engine. Check each site. Reliable Can the author or publisher be trusted? Is the info biased? Search for the name of the site’s creator. Who is it? Is the site selling products or services? Recent Is the Information up-to-date? Loop for an update or copyright date at bottom of page? More recent-more accurate. Verifiable Do other sources give you the same information? Check other sources (both print and Web) to see if similar.

Un-Reliable Sites for Accurate Information?

Un-Reliable Sites for Accurate Information? Wiki Sites – Sites where any users can log on and add-edit info. Example - Wikipedia Certain Videos/Movies Can be uploaded by anyone. Evaluate the author or creator first. Example – Certain YouTube Videos Question/Answer Sites Ask.com, Yahoo! Answers, Answers.com Acceptable to use as basis or grounds for start of research. But always verify information and use relevant, reliable, & recent sites.

VII. Protect Your Information on the Internet? How to keep your information secure, or safe: Firewall = hardware or software that protects a computer or network from intruders. Never give out personal information, unless secure. Use different user names & passwords for different sites. Blocking/Filtering Software – prevents users from accessing certain sites. Can monitor or record what sites a user has visited as well.

VIII. Surfing the Internet Use Search Engines – Website lets you search for other Web pages using keywords. Examples: Google, Yahoo, Bing, etc. Home Page – First Web page you see when you open a Site. Includes Name of Site, Links to other Sites, Table of Contents, Graphics, Search Boxes, etc. Usually includes Site Map = Index of all the main pages in the site that you may use to jump straight to a page without drilling down. Drill Down – When you explore Web Site – start with Home Page usually and drill down (clicking on links to open new Web pages within the site to find specific information)

Using Boolean Operators When searching the Web – best to limit your search results using Boolean Operators. To Find Web Pages With… Use These Words or Symbols Example An exact phrase in quotes Use quotation marks “ “ “boston terriers” Two or more keywords (may not be next to each other on the page) AND, +, &, or just key a space between words cats AND dogs cats & dogs cats + dogs cats dogs One or both keywords OR Lizards OR snakes One keyword but not another NOT, - cats NOT tigers cats -tigers A combo of specific information Use a combination of Boolean operators “pet car” + lizards OR snakes (will find pages with “pet car” and lizards and pages with “pet care” and snakes)

The Internet – Practice Please go to my teacher website – this week’s Page – download and save the “Internet – Practice” --- SAVE AS (Internet Practice –Your last name) --- Due by end of block (or by 10/3 by beginning of block to my Email!) Before start – explain Extra Credit Activity (see my example) - Binary Name
