3 SOFTWARE & HARDWARE REQUIRED Form of modem – This converts the analog signal (Telephone) to a digital signal (Computers) Router – This is a device that connects all the computers up, also links to the router. Web browser –For e.g. Internet Explorer Terminal emulator - A program that allows computer to enter and receive data from a computer system as if it were a particular type of attached terminal. Firewall – This protects networks from outside networks. The firewall can screen incoming viruses and only allow certain access to the internet. Anti virus, anti malware software - Computer programs that attempt to identify, thwart and eliminate computer viruses and other malicious softwares.

4 INTERNET CONNECTIVITY OPTIONS Internet connectivity optionsAdvantagesDisadvantages Dial-up This is where a password and username is given to the user; they then login by using the dial-up connection program. They will need this every time they want to use the internet. Can be accessed in any computer anywhere. Cheapest option Can only use one computer at one time Slower speed than other options. Password and username security. Have to wait for the modem to dial then there is connection Phone lines are busy because it uses the phone lines. E-speed E-speed users at higher speeds of 256kbit/s, 384kbit/s, 512kbit/s or 640kbit/s with unlimited surfing. More than one computer may use this. With a router, internet can be shared. Faster speed than alternatives such as dialup. Always connected Doesn’t disturb phone lines No need for passwords and usernames. Have to pay flat rate every month even during times when internet is not being used e.g. holidays. Increases the computer’s vulnerability to viruses, spyware and hacking due to increased exposure Leased Line BruNet Leased Line provides dedicated, high bandwidth Internet connectivity in applications where routing for multiple static IP Addresses and a high speed data transfer (greater than 56K) are required. The bandwidth that BruNet provided will be from 64Kbps to 2048Kbps. Dedicated to one user. Fastest speed available. Weeks or months to install. Expensive to install. Most expensive option.

5 HOW DOES DATA TRAVEL THE INTERNET? The data is divided into small chunks called packets. These packets are sent with a header (contains the destination (recipient), origin (sender) and the sequence information used to reassemble the data at the destination and rearranged in order.

6 WHAT IS INTERNET PROTOCOL? Internet protocol - This makes sure the data reaches the computer that has its own individual address. It determines how the packets are sent along the internet, which router to take, which path for each packet to use. IP defines the addressing system of the internet. (back)(back)

7 WHAT IS IP ADDRESS? IP address is a number that uniquely identifies each computer or device connected to the internet, consisting of four groups of numbers, each separated by a period. (back)(back)

8 HOW TO CONTROL STUDENTS’ ACCESS? A content filtering software filters what websites students go on. This monitors what they look at. A Content control software can then disallow websites such as social networking sites, sites that promote illegal activity, sites that are sexually explicit, sites that promote recreational drug and alcohol use and sites that promote bigotry and hate speech. They should disallow websites that the content filtering software picked up as most visited and are not related to a student’s studies. There should be netiquette information. (back)(back)

9 GLOSSARY Internet Protocol: It determines how the packets are sent along the internet HTTP: HyperText Transfer Protocol. A protocol used to transmit data over the World Wide Web FTP: File transfer protocol; the method to upload and download files with other computers TCP/IP: TCP/IP (transmission control protocol/internet protocol) is technology that manages the transmission of data by breaking it up into packets and how they are sent along Cookies listserv: Web cam: Video camera with output than can be displayed on a webpage Internet Language: Languages that are used on the Internet to view pages.

10 GLOSSARY Netiquette: (Short of Netiquette) the code of acceptable behavior users should follow while on the internet Intranet: Internal network that applies Internet technologies; used to make company information accessible to employees and facilitate working in groups URL: Uniform Resource Locator is the address of a resource available on the Internet Hyperlink: Web address that links to a document or webpage Bandwidth: Width of the communication channel WWW: The World Wide Web (WWW) is a means of accessing information over the Internet. Browser: Software used to access and view WebPages on the internet. Search engine: Software used to find web sites, web pages and internet files. E-mail: Transmission of messages and files via a computer network as a local network area or the internet.
