Strategy 1 Hangman Division

248 ÷ 4 4 248 -120 30 128 -120 30 8 2 -8 Step 1 – Make the Hangman Board. Step 2 – Place the dividend (248) and the divisor (4) on the board. Step 3 – Use friendly factors to solve. (Each friendly factor is a partial quotient.) Step 4 – Subtract the product (ie 4 x 30=120). Step 5 – Repeat steps 3 and 4 until the difference is less than the divisor. Step 6 – Add all the friendly factors. These are your partial quotients. Step 7 – The sum of the friendly factors is your quotient (62), the difference is your remainder (0) if any. 62 248 ÷ 4 = (120÷4) + (120÷4) + (8÷4) = 30 + 30 + 2……….. = 62……………………….

Rectangular Array Division Strategy 2 Rectangular Array Division

348 ÷ 4 300 + 40 + 8 4 x ? = 300 Doesn’t work easily. Use friendly numbers. 240 + 80 + 28 60 20 + 7 + = 87 4 240 80 28 Step 1: Think about how to break apart the dividend (248). *Using place value? *Using Friendly numbers? (Friendly numbers are multiples of the divisor.) Step 2: Create a rectangular array. Step 3: Place the partial dividends (240,80,28) and the divisor (4) in the model. Step 4: Use “Think Multiplication” to find each partial quotient. Step 5 : Add the partial quotients. 348 ÷ 4 = (240÷4) + (80÷4) + (28÷4) = 60 + 20 + 7……….. = 87……………………….
