2. What is standard algorithm?
Standard algorithm is a shortcut to long division.

3. Step 1
First, see if the divisor can go into the the first digit of the dividend.
If the divisor does go into the first digit of the dividend then see how many times it goes and write it in the first place value of the quotient.
If the divisor doesn’t go into the first digit of the dividend then see if the divisor goes into the first and second digits of the dividend and write how many times it goes in the second place value of the quotient.

4. Step 2
Second, take the number you wrote on the first or second place value and multiply it by the divisor.
Then take your product and write it below the first or the first and the second digit of the dividend.
Hint: If your product is a 1 digit number write it below the first digit of the dividend if your product is a 2 digit number the write it below the first and second digits of the dividend.

5. Step 3
After you write the product below the dividend subtract the product from the number you divided by your divisor.

6. Step 4
Once you have found the difference of the problem, compare and see if your difference or remainder is a smaller number than your divisor.
If your difference or remainder is a smaller number than your divisor you are on the right track.
If your difference or remainder is a bigger number than your divisor you did some thing wrong.

7. Step 5
When you know you are on the right track bring down the next digit of your dividend and place the number next to the difference
Hint: Don’t bring down a 0 if you don’t have another digit your difference is the remainder.

8. Step 6
Finally, you will repeat these steps until the final remainder is 0 or less than the divisor.
