Hitler and the Rise of Nazi Germany Chapter 13 Section 5

I. The Weimar Republic Germany became a republic in 1919, led by a chancellor. A liberal democratic republic. Faced problems of disunity, high inflation, and weak leadership. 1929- The Great Depression hits.

II. Nazi Party Rises to Power Adolf Hitler: Born and raised in Austria German WWI veteran. Hated the Weimar; fanatically anti-semitic. 1920: Became leader of the National Socialist Worker’s Party (NAZI).

Hitler In 1923, he went to prison and wrote Mein Kampf (“My Struggle”). Germans are the superior Aryan race. Jews are a race, not a religion. 1933- Elected to chancellor becaue of large support. By 1934- he was the sole dictator of Germany Nazi Party destroyed socialists/communists and killed disloyal members.

III. The Third Reich Totalitarian state Run by the SS Troops (Hitler’s army) and the Gestapo (Secret Police) Hitler broke every stipulation of the Versailles Treaty.

The Nuremburg Laws Passed in 1935. Deprived Jews of citizenship and took away their civil rights. Hitler Youth was organized.
