Discussion Lead: Pen-Chung (Pen) Yew 2017 NSF CSR PI Meeting Discussion Session: Hardware and Computer Architecture Discussion Lead: Pen-Chung (Pen) Yew

Hardware and Computer Architecture Session (I) New emerging areas End of Moore’s Law and Dennard scaling prompts the need for innovative computer architectures to explore new hardware technologies, e.g. 3D integration, HBM, quantum computing, carbon nanotube, …. New applications such as deep learning, virtual reality, autonomous systems, IoT, demands hardware specialization to achieve power efficiency and higher performance, e.g. FPGA-based, ASIC-based architectures Innovative memory abstractions and implementations are needed for data-centric computing, new memory devices such as HBM, persistent memory, and network-based storage systems.

Hardware and Computer Architecture Session (II) Selecting appropriate hardware and software boundaries and support for programmability will be critical Architecture support for better security and privacy will continue to be important Need to look at new computation models such as biological-inspired systems, e.g. DNA-based storage devices Areas that need larger collaborative teams to make progress System design infrastructures are needed to support ASIC/FPGA SW/HW co-design, design-space exploration, componentized and reusable HW design, evaluation and testing tools…
